Sara had not gotten along with her mother as long as she could remember. OK, most teenage girls don't get along that great with their mothers. Comparing notes with Joe and her other friends, however, Sara realized that most mothers weren't psycho bitches like Cathy. OK, why turn her back? This was a terrific opportunity to lead a mom-free life.
Joe? Joe was not a bad guy, but he was a painfully socially inept nerd. And unlike the stereotypical nerd, he wasn't even that good at schoolwork or, frankly, even that bright. Joe's future seemed to be a career in the night watchman industry. And anyway, hadn't Joe wished to be transformed?
Jo and little Cathy? Happy, chattering girls enjoying their ice cream and impressing most who glanced at them with their cuteness and vivacity. "I wish that Jo and Cathy be smart and well-adjusted little girls."
But who was going to be their parents? Joe's single mom already had enough on her plate without dealing with five year old twins, and Sara's dad was now alone and could hardly deal with three children. Sara grinned. Got it.
"I wish that Joe's mom be happily married to my dad, and that they have three children, me and the twin girls Jo and Cathy. I wish that we all live together at my house. I wish that everyone but me remembers things as having been this way, and that in particular Jo forgets all about the ring."
The girls had finished eating, and were ready to walk home with their big sister. When they got there, Sara's new mom was waiting. "Thanks for taking the girls, Sara." she said and gave Sara a hug. Sara's old mom had never thanked her for anything, and Sara couldn't remember the last time they had hugged. Yes, Sara thought, this ring definitely has its uses.
