“Look, Sarah, please...” begged Roy.
“I'm Roy,” said Sarah's body. “You're Sarah.”
“You know what I mean!” snapped Roy.
“Perhaps,” answered Sarah's body. “And I even sympathize with you. But right now, you're going to get us both into a lot of trouble if you run around calling yourself Roy and me Sarah. You might be hallucinating that you have the body of a man. But that isn't what I see – and it's certainly not what anyone else sees. You're just going to get yourself locked up in the loony bin, unless you can restrain yourself a bit and call me Roy and yourself Sarah.”
Roy gritted his teeth in frustration. He knew she was right. But he very much did not want the indignation and humiliation of being called “Sarah” from now on. Bad enough he was dressed in all her clothes!
“Okay fine,” he finally sighed impatiently. “I'm 'Sarah' and you're 'Roy.' Now, please use that little role swapper device and switch us back around! As you just pointed out, I'm going to eventually get committed to some insane asylum if we stay like this. I don't know how to live Sarah's life. And I'm certainly not going to start sleeping with Jack. So the sooner we switch back, the better.”
“I don't want to switch back,” answered Sarah's body. “Even if I believe your story... which I do, by the way... but even accepting that I'm the original 'Sarah'... well... I'm not anymore! I have the same memories and personality as you do. I honestly think I'm Roy. I don't know what happened to Sarah's original identity – maybe its still buried deep in my subconscious or something. But... here's the thing: as far as my conscious mind is concerned, I'm a dude. I'm Roy Milford. And I have no desire to use this little gizmo to become my roommate's girlfriend. So... I'm sorry Sarah. I'm going to stay as Roy from now on.”
“B-B-But you can't!” protested Roy. “That's my life!”
“No,” said Sarah's body sympathetically. “It was your life. Now it's mine. I honestly believe it. I have all your memories, your thoughts, your... everything. I am you, Roy. It's like there's now two of us. But unfortunately, there's only enough room in this reality for one of us to live this life. So...”
“I'm not going to be Sarah Howard forever!” snapped Roy.
“Let me finish,” said Sarah's body. “I am going to stay as Roy from now on. But, like I said, I really do believe your story. And I want to help. So, I tell you what – let me use this device to switch you into the life of... well... anyone you want! You pick a person, and I'll swap you into their life. You can't be Roy anymore. But you can become anybody else... and whoever you pick will become the new Sarah Howard, and be none-the-wiser. Deal?”
