Steve realized now may be his chance to control the book, if it has a recharge time, his family of 4 didn't adequately deplete its stores, but maybe, just maybe, completely swapping an entire hospital could do it. Steve hoped being around the same age and being the same gender was an indication, though it hadn't been an indicator in the past...
Steve desperately racked her brain, what room was he admitted to when he was pregnant? 306? 308? Nurse Stephanie was off without hesitation. The Nurse Stephanie personality was warning that she shouldn't leave her post, she'll get in trouble. Steve brushed the concern aside and tried to maintain control as the dominant personality. He had spent countless hours sucking his toes when he lost his focus while a baby, Accessing the alternate personality's memories makes it stronger... but Steve needed to know where he was in relation to where he wanted to be.
"Stephanie, where are you going, you just got back from break!" called a familiar voice.
"Sorry Carol, I need to run to my car and then the bathroom. You know." Stephanie immediately replied shooting a glance back at the woman. Images of her car, where it is in the parking lot, where she keeps her tampons, and her favorite brand of tampon all flashed in her head as well as an image of her purse which she knew she had two spare which should get her through her shift easily... "On second thought I can wait."
Stephanie paused ready to walk back to the nurses station. "On third thought, Id better go now, just in case." Steve was pushing hard to maintain control. What if someone else opened the book and he became an unconscious patient who's dying in the ER, or someone in a coma? "Oh my God" what about the people in that state now?" Steve thought with renewed focus realizing that doctors, nurses, paramedics, or even visiting children may have been turned into people who are dying now.
Steve briskly walked out of the ward he was in while trying to not think about the details attempting to flood his brain. For a second she paused by the elevator preparing to go to the employee parking lot but Steve instead followed the signs to the maternity ward. He briskly walked ignoring the cramps, of course he really was on her period... And everyone in that ward has sync'd up with Paula.. the bitch... Stephanie almost turned around and went back to the elevator but Steve kept on going.
He got to the maternity ward and found room 306. The door was shut. "Damn" Steve muttered "Hello are you decent?" she asked as she knocked.
"Come in" came a reply.
"Damn." Steve muttered. Opening the door he found an entire family gathered around a young new mother, none of the faces he recognized. "How are you doing sweetheart, is there anything I can get for you?" Stephanie automatically said as Steve entered.
"No I'm fine for now. The baby is sleeping." the woman replied amidst her glowing family.
"Good" Steve replied. "A patient who had this room before you said they left an old book here, has anyone seen it?" asked innocently.
From the far side of the room a child's voice claimed to have the book and within a few seconds it had been passed from person to person to the nurse's waiting hands. "No don't!" came a sudden shout from the door. Everyone was startled when they looked up to see the very buff, personal trainer who suddenly appeared in the doorway holding a half full protein shaker bottle.
The baby started to cry, which was adorable rather than ear-piercing or annoying. Steve looked closely, The features were hispanic yet vaguely familiar. "Alan? Megan? Is that you? Are you really awake?"
The entire family turned there heads between the two confused, the child in the back chimed in "Of course he's awake."
"It's me Alan. Dad? Is that you?" At this point the family did several double takes when the 20 something Caucasian Nurse Stephanie nodded yes and hugged the 20 something Latino Physical Therapist reassuring him that she was his father...
As soon as the two exited the room Brother-in-law Michael shut the door behind them and asked the room "What was that?" to which nobody had a reply...
Anyway...
