The old man held a simple-looking metal pendant. It looked to be of rather cheap construction, probably tin or pewter or something, nothing too fancy. On the end of a metal chain dangled a little dreamcatcher-shaped charm, complete with crudely sculpted feathers.
"You like it?" he said with a wide grin. "Not expensive! Elegant! ... what does it do? What does it do??? Anything, that's what!" He cackled gleefully. "Easy to use! Just wear it around your neck before you go to sleep, and you will be physically transported into your dreams. That's right, you will be there, in full command of your mental faculties! And you can do anything! You can live there, sleep, eat, grow old indefinitely. But it's better than this world, oh yes. You know how dreams and things in dreams change randomly and without warning? That's what will happen with you. Of course, it all depends on... things. Like how much you "resonate" with your dreamworld. Maybe your slightest stray thought might change the world according to your desires. Or you may have to concentrate hard to cause things to change. Or... maybe they might change but not the way you expect!"
He cackled again, swinging the dreamcatcher pendant. "Eh? What if things go badly? That's easy, there are failsafes built into the pendant. If you don't like where you are or what's happening, just say "save me, Sandman" or a phrase to that effect. That will take you out of whatever situation you're in and put you in a completely new one. And if at any time you want to wake up, just imitate the sound of a rooster at the top of your lungs. Hm? Yes, you have to say it, if you hear a rooster in your dream it'll do squat. Doesn't have to be perfect, "cock-a-doodle-doo" will be fine, yes, mm-hm. And if you end up in a position where you can't say anything, well... you're at the mercy of the dreamworld".
The old man leaned forward. "You have to be careful though. The beings in your dreamworld have minds of their own and may act in ways you may not want them to. Be warned. If at any moment you "die" or are separated from your pendant, you will be immediately sent back to the waking world. And when you enter your dreams, you will have only your pendant and whatever you were wearing or holding when you fell asleep. What's that? Oh... you can take things from the dream back into the waking world. You can try, at least. But I cannot take responsibility for any problems that may cause, heh, heh!" He put the pendant back on the rack it came from and sat back with a smile.
"For you, only $4.99".
