Two hours later, the three of them were utterly lost in the woods.
This was, of course, part of Trevor's new idea. He could have made it simpler for sure, but he wanted to run the other two around for a while and watch them panic. He may have had a tiny bit of a mean streak.
"Guys," he said eventually, "if we can't make it back by sundown, we should probably look for the mansion so we can spend the night there."
"Look for the what?" said Ike. Kyle, tired and grumpy and lagging a few paces behind, remained quiet but certainly looked interested.
"The mansion that's around here. Haven't you heard? Some rich weirdo built it like a hundred years ago and it's been abandoned for a couple decades. I read somewhere that it's cursed..." No such mansion actually existed, but a dull blue glow beneath Trevor's shirt quickly confirmed that reality had been rearranged to match his words.
And, just as Trevor wanted, they came upon the mansion just when it was starting to get dark. Large as it was, it didn't stand out among the tall trees and surrounding hills. It was clearly dilapidated, with broken windows, a crumbling chimney, and a missing front door, but Kyle and Ike were just glad to have a roof over their heads for the night. Along with Trevor, they quickly found a room at the back of the first floor that was in decent shape and they set their things there and started eating some granola bars they'd packed in case of an emergency. Neither of them paid any mind to the idea of a curse that Trevor had mentioned, but like everything Trevor said since finding the magic stone, the curse was very much real.
