The checkup went pretty smoothly. Most of Kim’s medical records had already been sent over by her usual doctor, so most of the data was collected for more scientific reasons. As they took her measurements, Kim kept each detail in mind, knowing she would soon be saying goodbye to it all. For some reassurance, she reminded herself that she still had plans, and if her body was the price for achieving her revenge, she would pay it gladly. Besides, she would be getting some valuable abilities along the way. Imagining setting Lisa’s hair on fire or scaring her with corrosive shadow balls brought a smile to her face.
“So, just curious. You know what monster I’m becoming. Is there any way to predict what my elemental powers might be?”
The doctor shook her head. “Not that we’ve discovered yet. Much about nymphs is still unknown, since there aren’t that many around. The only thing we can do is see what direction your physical appearance takes, hair coloration, eyes, things like that.”
“It seems kind of inconvenient.”
“A bit, yes,” the doctor said with a shrug. “But look on the bright side. You’re making medical history.”
“I am? How so?”
“Well, there are only 11 nymphs so far that we know of, and seven different elemental powers. I’m sure you read all that in the pamphlet they gave you, right?”
Kim nodded.
“Good. Well, with such few numbers, only four of those powers are shared by more than one nymph, and none by more than two. So, no matter what power you get, it’ll be a first. You may get a new element. You may be the first to share one of the remaining three. Or you may be the first to share a power with two other nymphs. Whatever your case, some part of what you experience will no doubt find its way into the pamphlet given to the next nymph.”
“Oh, okay.” Kim was not sure about her feelings about this. Sure, it sounded nice to be part of something important, but it also meant greater scrutiny. Would she be able to leave her past completely behind and get back at her bullies when all of the details of her transition would be recorded for posterity?
This consideration occupied her mind as she finished up her checkup and returned to her room. According to the doctor, she had only a day before the changes really kicked in. How would she spend her last day as herself?
