Danna nodded, and cast her gaze down to my tray.
"So... How are we going to do this?" she wondered aloud, gesturing at the food. "Seeing is one thing, but these hands would never hold anything..."
"How about this?"
I picked up a spoon, loaded it with applesauce, and slowly stuck it in her mouth. She licked the spoon clean and burped, sending us both into a fit of giggles. The cycle repeated: Another spoonful, another burp, another minute of us chuckling like a pair of 5-year-olds laughing at their own jokes. It was as though we'd been friends since kindergarten.
As Danna gulped down the last of the applesauce, the pill finished and popped into my mouth. I hid it under my tray, taking care that Danna didn't notice. Luckily, she was busy eyeing up a stem of grapes.
My free hand deftly picked the grapes off with my free hand, and dropped them into a small bowl fashioned from my thigh. She opened her mouth wide, nearly squealing with glee. I popped a couple in her mouth, and took one for myself.
While she chewed, my mind raced. What should I do with the pill? I still really didn't want to risk taking it myself. Curious though I was, I didn't want to risk becoming like Danna or any of my classmates. Especially if these transformations really were random...
"Jen-" Danna's voice snapped me back to reality. " Can I have a drink?"
"Oh– Yes! Of course." I grabbed my milk carton, shook it a little, then began to open it.
As I pulled back the cardboard spout, a thought popped into my head. If I gave her the pill, there was a chance she could live a better life. Even if she doesn't go fully back to normal, there's no way she could get worse than she already was... Right?
I paused, weighing my options...
