Shelly swam toward the coast her powerful tail moving her quickly across open water faster then any land built ship or ocean creature. Mermaids used to be common before her birth, now the city of Atlantis her was almost a ghost town with only a quarter of the homes still populated. The rise of humans throwing thrash into the water, then worse than trash with toxic waste had killed so many of her kind. To their minor credit the humans had been getting somewhat better with the worse of the toxic waste but the effects had been extremely low birth rates for mermaids and the population sinking fast.
Finally with death of their race on the horizon an solution was found, a powerful transformation agent could turn the land walkers into sea swimmer merpeople. The mer council quickly agreed to test the agent and the results had been wonderful, the nearly 100 people turned including her Shelly’s own parents had been transformed into mermaids and merman and without the exposure to the toxic waste they had quickly given birth to a new generation of merpeople. That had been almost 25 years ago and the council had decided to get another round of people to replace their lost numbers.
The best part of the agent was that all she would have to do is introduce the agent into the new merperson’s body. She could swim up and either stab them with a needle or use her blow gun to fire on people along the beach. Once done they begin to dry out and their body would call out to the sea, once in the water they would be start the change into either mermaids or merman. That is when the hard part started, still that was her mission. To find and transfom land walkers into merpeople to help rebuild society.
The only odd thing about the change was that sometimes gender would change, her own mother had once been a man working on a fishing boat. Now she was a mother to three mermaids with a loving husband who used to be the captain of that ship.
As she approached the coast she began looking for targets to help rebuild the merpeople society.
