Jessie rounded the corner leaving Sarah and Terry to talk. The two grown ups were so boring she wanted to see Duke. The young eight year olds find was fuzzy, she remembered that she had come to see Duke but she couldn’t remember why? A flash of Duke being her boyfriend made her giggle, Jessie was too little for a boyfriend and besides who would want to kiss a boy, that was gross. Jessie shook that thought from her head, only to have another thought cross her young mind. Sarah and Terry, she thought they were friends of hers, but that made no sense either. Terry and Sarah were grown ups, why would she be friends with grown ups? Looking towards the couch she could now see Duke watching t.v.
“Hey Duke whatcha doing,” she asked innocently. Duke smiled, hopping off the couch as he quickly approached Jessie. Dukes thoughts were muddled as well. He could of sworn he had known Jessie far longer than only a few years. Had the two of them actually kissed? This made no sense to Duke, he wouldn’t kiss a girl. What Duke did remember though was that he and Jessie went to school together. “Hey Jessie,” he smiled. “I was just watching t.v.”
“Can I watch t.v. Too,” she asked. Duke nodded as Jessie giggled with joy, hopping onto the couch next to Duke. As the two eight year olds now began to talk, Duke remembered the lots sitting on the table. While he wasn’t exactly sure what they did he knew they were magic. “Hey Jessie you see this,” he whispered, pointing to the lots. “They’re magic.”
“No way,” Jessie scoffed.
“No Jessie they are I swear,” Duke exclaimed. “I made a wish on them earlier and it came true.” Jessie raised an eyebrow, turning to face Duke. The young no girl was intrigued now. “So what did you wish for,” she asked. Duke glanced around before leaning close to Jessie. “I wished that you would come play with me,” he said sheepishly.
Jessie laughed as she now looked at her friend. “That’s silly Duke I was coming over today,” she said. “Sarah was brining me over.”
“Jessie is Sarah your mom,” Duke asked. Jessie gave the boy a confused look as she tried to piece things together. No Sarah wasn’t her mom, she knew what her mom looked like but why wouldn’t she bring her over to Dukes house. A thought flashed through her mind, telling her that Sarah was a friend of hers, but, once again that was impossible. Jessie was eight while Sarah was a grown up. As she now thought things over she tried to think who Sarah could be. “No Sarah is my....babysitter,” she answered, slightly confused. “You know like Terry is your babysitter.”
Duke paused, was Terry his babysitter? Duke tried to think, he could of sworn Terry was his best friend but how could that be possible? Terry was a grown up, just like Sarah. Slowly his mind began to relieve things for him, Terry must be his babysitter. “I guess Terry is my babysitter,” he mumbled. Shaking his head he now tried to clear his thoughts, he had more important things to talk about. “Listen anyway,” he said. “Those things are magic. It’s true okay.”
“Okay Terry I’ll believe you,” Jessie answered. “So how do they work.” Duke smiled as he now picked up the lots, placing them in Jessie’s hand. “Well,” he said. “All you have to do is make a wish and then let them go. When their done rolling your wish is granted.”
Jessie gazed curiously down at the lots, still unsure about their supposed magic. “Okay let’s say that’s true,” he said. “What would I wish for?”
“I don’t know,” Duke shrugged. “Whatever you want. Do you want to try them?”
Jessie looked at the lots, shrugging in acceptance. “I guess one throw wouldn’t hurt,” she said. Jessie now made her wish as she released the lots.
