The infamous M8 Corporation had grown into a billion dollar industry based around the creation and sales of artificial life forms. While they had faced vicious ethical and moral opposition in the start, the big court cases had long since been settled.
After all, if you pay to have something created for you, isn’t it your personal property?
The law had quickly adapted to this weird new world where human and non human life could be created on a whim. A completely different set of rights existed for the so-called “artificial beings” that saw them essentially treated as a living toy. So long as it couldn’t be proven they were being abused or non consensually harmed, the government really didn’t have a problem with it.
Of course the kickbacks and investment into public works didn’t hurt.
After all the dust had settled legally it became a fact of life that one could be standing in an elevator with a well to do business man and his fox woman held by a leash around her neck. Or a lonely basement dweller who had bought and paid for a replica of his favourite anime girl. And now, the first dinosaurs were coming off the line, though they were staggeringly expensive in comparison to the already costly service.
Now, with the new “r-beam” coming onto the public market, and the ability to covertly ship new toys through the mail without having to obtain a possession license, there were bound to be new headaches caused by the notorious company.
