Finding yourself in the costume aisle, you begin to browse. You really need to find something to wear to Gina's Halloween party tonight, and you'd like it to be good. Gina's parents are filthy rich, and, while you've never been to her house before, you've heard it's basically a mansion. You're friend Amy heard from Jessica that there's a theater in the basement, a heated pool and hot tub out back and a massive kitchen with a full bar.
The racks are overflowing with an assortment of costumes and accessories, and you have to muscle your way through to even get a glimpse of what each one is. Plaid shirts mix with fake brown fur, crammed against flow-y hippie skirts and gauzy wire wings. A glimmer of iridescence catches your eye and you struggle to pull out the costume. It's heavy, hanging on the rack with a weighty feeling and you are pleased to find it's some sort of mermaid costume! It seems like it's made from wetsuit material, which makes sense, you guess... maybe you can flop around in the pool a bit - this would be better than something super skimpy that would just leave you feeling chilled afterwards. Grabbing a blue wig from a nearby shelf, you head to the dressing room with the costume.
Once inside, you hang the costume on the hook and toe your shoes off. Lowering you jeans, you leave your socks on because: changing room floor. After peeling off your shirt, you remove the costume from the hanger and inspect the details. The heavy "tail" is covered in shimmering scales, looking mostly blue and green but with a rainbow of that iridescence that caught your eye to begin with; it's almost like the sheen of a pearl or seashell. The material forms a long, triangular tube skirt with a hole at the very bottom. The large tail fins are attached to the front, covering the hole and thereby hiding your feet from view. You'll have to practice lounging and flicking the tailfins a bit for effect, you think to yourself with a smile. The tail seems to just be a skirt, so you look back at the hanger for other parts of the costume and find two large seashells attached with a coarse bit of twine wrapped around the wire. Seems a bit stereotypical, but whatever - it's a mermaid costume.
