The Magic Shop

New Lives

added by Anonymous 3 years ago AR O

From the day that Davey opened the door and stared with wide, round eyes at Ollie in the arms of Ollie's enormous neighbor, three fates changed.

Edwin Robinson took some convincing, but he gradually accepted the boys' wild story about a magic ring and their suspicions about a pizza delivery guy turned thief.

Ollie's lack of concern soon transferred to little Davey, although he resisted longer and with more stubborn determination than his boyfriend. For Ollie, he was living the dream and returning to adulthood no longer mattered. Soon enough, Davey's own instincts adjusted themselves until his days were spent having fun with his "brother" as they made forts of the sofa cushions, explored the neighborhood creek in their bare feet, and at night vied for Edwin to read to them from their favorite bedtime stories. Edwin always read some from Davey's favorite and then some from Ollie's. Both boys were usually asleep in their shared bed before he finished reading.

Edwin had never expected a family, but the ring's magic changed his life, too. He had settled into a pleasant routine, largely thanks to his work in government statistics. An accomplished user of computers, too, he made some subtle edits on the available histories of Oliver and David. Some altered adoption records, birth certificates, and Social Security cards matched their identities to their new bodies.

Eventually, Edwin enrolled them in school, which is how he met their other daddy. Greg worked as a kindergarten teacher at the local elementary school and made Edwin's acquaintance as a parent-teacher evening. Greg never knew the truth about his "boys" because Edwin thought it a needless complication and both Ollie and even Davey had long forgotten their brief former lives as adults. Sometimes, when he caught Davey looking serious, Edwin worried that the boy still remembered.

Then Davey would do or say something so completely and utterly boyish in spirit that he realized that, although Davey was the more sober-minded of the pair, he was very much a boy at heart even if a bit of an old soul in his outlook at times.

They never learned what became of the ring, but the unfortunate pizza delivery guy came to regret stealing a magic ring. That, however, is another tale.
