As Mary woke up, sun streaming across her face, she found herself in the embrace of her newly turned skunk boyfriend. It felt nice. Just to have someone to cling to. To love and embrace. She had an escape.
Knock Knock.
Then reality came knocking.
Knock Knock.
“Todd.”
Mary tried to awaken her boyfriend. It was of no use.
“Todd!”
Mary tried again, this time, employing force in her attempt. In this, she was successful. Todd opened his eyes slowly, then yawning with arms outstretched.
“What’s wrong?” asked Todd.
“It’s the weekend, right?” asked Mary frantically.
“Uh, let me check,” replied Todd.
Todd pushed off the covers he slept under, and languidly sauntered over to the other side of the bedroom to retrieve the phone from his pants.
“It’s Saturday, 8:30 in the morning,” said Tom. “You don’t have work.”
“That’s not what I’m worried about,” said Mary.
Knock Knock.
“I’m worried about the knocking,” said Mary anxiously. “Someone’s at the door!”
“Yeah, so?” Tom replied nonchalantly.
“Look at us, dumb-ass,” said Mary, showing irritation at her boyfriend.
Todd then looked at himself and his girlfriend. Then the sudden epiphany came to him.
“Okay, okay, let’s just change back then,” said Todd, trying to keep his composure. “So we just drink the human vial, right?”
“Yeah,” said Mary.
Mary and Todd put on their clothes, so they could deal with their unexpected guest more efficiently. It was difficult with their new bodies, but it didn’t matter when they were human again.
Mary located the box of vials on her kitchen counter. She opened the box, and located the vial marked “Human”. As she tried to open her antidote, her new fingers stumbled with the flask, and let the precious contents fall down the drain.
“No!” said both Mary and Todd in unison.
“You said I could change back!” exclaimed Todd in a sense of anger and grief. “I don’t want to be stuck as some... abomination!”
“Okay, okay,” said Mary, trying to maintain her composure with what had just happened. “Let’s just open the door, and see what happens. This could be a dream.”
