Back in the bathroom the girls were staring at each other intensely. Although they were clearly identical twins their different styles set them apart. Emily was wearing tight tattered jeans and a midriff showing black t-shirt with a Joy Division album cover on it. Paula was still dressed in a tank top and skinny jeans. Emily had her straight black hair tied in pigtails, while Paula's was short and curly.
“So that thing changes your memory sometimes” stated Emily, scrunching her brow. "But I can't believe I was a blond white girl just a minute ago." She tried hard to remember what her original life had been like, but the only memories she had told her she was exactly who she saw in the mirror, and that Paula was her sister. Then a sudden thought insisted they weren't supposed to be sisters. They were related...somehow...but not that way. But that was only a faint inkling. It was hard to accept it over the clear memories she now had.
Paula turned the camera over in her hands, scrutinizing it in a panic. "It's true! I swear, Emily! You and I are just friends, not...!"
Emily dove toward Paula and stabilized the camera with her own hands. Her pigtails whipped her back as she abruptly stopped. She loved feeling them slap around when she moved, a constant reminder of her punkish styling. Not many juniors wore such a "juvenile" hairstyle. "WOAH! Easy, sis. This thing is already broken and the last thing we need is for it to go off and make us both forget everything."
Paula gave up the camera and backed away. She was obviously rattled, Emily could tell. That wasn't like her at all. Maybe Emily really HAD changed drastically somehow. The way her sister was eyeing her made her feel almost like a stranger. It was unsettling, to say the least.
"I can prove if you take a picture of me. Maybe I'll turn into what you were. Or or or...maybe we can change you back," Paula chirped nervously.
"That shouldn't be a problem. There's a..." Emily suddenly paused and frowned. In her mind, she could tell she was missing something.
"What?" her sister asked, in a very small voice.
"I'm sure there's a way to change back easily, but I can't..." She shook her head, trying to jostle her thoughts loose. "My memory about how to use this thing is fuzzy. It must be a side-effect from when you flashed me." She turned the camera in every direction. She could find the dials for transformation type and awareness, but there was something she had to set to make the camera reverse changes, wasn't there?
Faint footsteps echoed down the quiet hallway outside. The girls' backs stiffened. "Okay, we're going to get caught if we wait here too long, so let's just try taking a picture of both of us with awareness on and hope that fixes...something." She set the camera to the setting she assumed would result in a small change, her thin fingers trembling as they hurriedly rotated the dials, and took a picture of the both of them in the mirror.
