Rose dialed the number of the local CDC center and the Monster center, only to be placed into an automated waiting list. She waited a few minutes and got yet another machine and had to put in their address, the number of people in the house and the number of people infected.
“Are you in need of life saving medical aid? Is the person transforming into a monster having trouble breathing or in deadly distress?” inquired the computer voice
“No.” answered Rose, they needed a nurse to take some blood samples nothing more.
“Good, a nurse will be over to take blood samples at the earliest moment. We will call you back to set up an appointment.” Said the computer voice before it hung up.
“Well that is useful…” cursed Rose as she dialed a second number, this one of one of her professors. The Professor a former CDC researcher who she had gotten close while she taught three classes, she was in. She knew if anyone was running the local CDC center or at worst was a high official there it was her. She dialed the number and on the third ring it went through.
“Hello…” said a tired sound woman’s voice
“Professor Smith, this is Rose from the…” started Rose
“Rose.” Said Professor Smith with a smile in her voice, a tired smile but a smile. “Why are you… oh, you came down with the flu?”
“No…well not yet at least one of my roommates did, she has two large red bumps on the shoulder blades, and we think it may be wings coming in.” explained Rose
“More then likely, however we have seen arms and other strange stuff start with things like that.” stated Professor Smith “Any other signs on your other roommates?”
“Not yet, it just happened. They are checking themselves now.” explained Rose “I was kind of hoping you could get a nurse over here to take a blood sample so that we can find out if we are all infected? I know you are overwhelmed but…”
“Overwhelmed is a fucking understatement.” cursed Professor Smith as Rose’s eyebrow raised. She had only heard Professor Smith curse once before and that was in a lab when she dropped a glass beaker on her foot.
“It’s worse than the news is saying isn’t it?” inquired Rose as there was a long pause on the other end.
“Well…I guess it will not matter in few hours.” stated Professor Smith “The President is going to address the nation, the virus has seemed to have mutated. The infection rate which was around 23% is now 94% infection rate.”
“My God.” Said Rose
“Your telling me, if this rate stays the same then by the time the infection works it course then there will be only around 20 million humans in the entire nation, the rest all 307 million will be monsters.” Answered Professor Smith “Same for the rest of the world. It’s the end of the human race basically.”
Rose’s eyes widened as her hand began to shake a bit as she held the phone to her ear. If that was the case then they were almost for sure becoming Monsters.
"Worse is we are seeing new types of monsters, I have someone who turned into a real life ghost...her human body dead but she is floating around. You can walk through her but she can still pick stuff up if she focuses on it, none of it makes any sense." said Professor Smith "Some of the others are even stranger then a Ghost."
"Wow..." started Rose
“The President is going announce the call up of the military and other new goals to aid in the transition of the nation toward Monsterhood.” said Professor Smith “Until we know what those goals are we aren’t doing anything, so you will just have to wait.”
“I see…” said Rose “Well, I wish us all luck.”
“Luck…ya.” Said Professor Smith, Rose could hear her eyes roll on the other end of the line. “Just do the best you can for your roommate and anyone else. We are still pulling out people in deadly danger, those growing gills and the like but don’t expect any nurse to come around to get blood for a test. We aren’t doing that anymore.”
“I understand.” Said Rose “I thank you for everything.”
“Goodbye.” Said Professor Smith as she hung up.
With that done Rose, her hand still shaking put her phone away.
