Kyle was alarmed by how mundane all the items seemed. Dog collars, what if someone used it on a dog? What would they turn into and more importantly, would the enchantment restraining the ferocity work? The letter opener that became a sword and turned the wielder into a knight. The necklace of vampirism, coffee mugs that change your destiny, neckties that warp your personality...
No, no... Kyle wanted something that would not be confused with some normal everyday object...
Meandering the aisles he found a small collection of identical books, each had a wand, and an amulet taped to it. Examining it he found he couldn't open it or any of the others but the book had a sleeve advertising that this could take him from peasant to master wizard in the school of his choice, included 1 Grimoire, 1 wand to act as a starter focus, and an amulet of spell failure. Kyle took the package to the front and explained that, "The book is defective... it won't even open."
"Oh it won't open until you purchase it. Its a protective measure." the man behind the counter said.
"How much does it cost?" Kyle asked realizing that nothing in the store had a price marked.
"It cost no money, but it does cost an amulet of spell failure, a wand of copying, and an enchanted bauble of your own design. These will serve as both payment and an examination. Upon accepting you will have a year to submit payment in full otherwise the book will return itself to this shop." The man smiled.
"You mean I could just walk out, memorize this book for a year and you'll just take it back? No harm no foul?" Kyle chuckled at the flaw in the man's business plan...
"That is certainly an option, however... we trust that you will find value in the book and will strive to keep it. So, is this the item you choose and you agree to the terms?" the man asked.
"Yeah, sure" Kyle responded.
The man pushed the package back over to Kyle. "Go ahead, view your prize." He beamed.
Kyle opened the book with ease, the first page read, "Payment required within 365 days, "Amulet of spell failure, wand of copying, and enchanted item of your choosing. To submit payment, draw Mirodan's minor circle and recite the following..."
Kyle chuckled, "Cute. What exactly does an amulet of spell failure do exactly? Make your spells fail?"
The man behind the counter chuckled. "Novice wizards and witches do that well enough on their own. No, It absorbs the magic of a failed spell in hopes of keeping apprentices alive. Its an amulet of protection from yourself... think safety scissors."
"Ahh..." Kyle said collecting his new items... "Thanks." He said as he rushed home, eager to find something to make him a hit at the party. He might be a wizard but he doesn't have to go as one... Being a ventriloquist would be really easy if a stuffed animal could really talk... Illusion magic could make an interesting outfit... let's see what I can do!
