"You have been given a great gift by my brother, Sapieno, the god of all of humanity." The dragoness explained. "In each generation, he gives one human the 'Light' - the power to alter the world using the power you have just used. I have a request of you. If you are willing, I would ask that you become my avatar."
"Your avatar? What do you mean?" Ty responded.
"I would like you to be my hand in the world. I would like you to represent dragonkind."
"I thought dragons were myths."
Nazara's slitted eyes became distant. "There was a time when dragons were common creatures on Earth. They thrived, and they faught for justice and honour. Humans became jealous of the great dragon community, and declared war upon them. The dragons were more powerful, but they were a peaceful race, and would only fight for justice, or in defense of their own lives."
Nazara continued. "The war against the dragons continued for centuries, and with nearly all of the dragons wiped out, the few remaining elders called a meeting of all dragons. They decided that for dragons to survive, they must go into hiding. They prayed to me, and I, with my brother Sapieno, granted them a solution. We turned them all into humans, so that they may survive, in the hopes that they may one day become dragons once again."
Nazara's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "That was ten millennia ago, and since then, there have been offspring of the dragons. They are only a small portion of the population, and I can no longer find them. They have mated with humans, and so the dragon heritage has been diluted, and so I am barely even aware of their existence."
"Therefore, I ask you to be my avatar, that you may find the dragons and return them to their rightful forms."
"Am I a dragon? How did you find me?" Ty asked.
"I found you when your magic rippled through space, causing slight changes to the universe. You are not a dragon, but you need not be one. I ask you to be my avatar within humanity. If you accept, you will fight for tolerance towards dragonkind, and to those of other forms. Other deities may approach you, and I will not restrict you from becoming their avatar also, as long as you do no harm to dragons."
"What if I were to refuse?"
"Then you would be returned to your own world, without memory of this meeting. I have approached every one of Sapieno's LightCarriers, and to this point, none have taken my offer. As dragons dwindle, my power fails, and now I am as you see me, frail and tired. If you succeed in your quest, I will be returned to my power, and I will grant you many gifts." Nazara was quite haggard in appearance, and Ty felt sorry for her.
"I accept. I will be your avatar." Ty said with as serious a tone as his cracking voice could manage. Nazara's eyes became brighter, hope clear in them.
"I thank you. As a symbol of our agreement, take this ring..." Nazara gestured, and a glowing gold ring formed in midair. "... and use it as you see fit. It has two purposes. First, it will allow you, when worn,to take the form of a dragon. Second, it will act as an indicator, and will glow when in proximity to dragons."
"As a final request, I ask that you behave as dragons do, fighting for justice and peace, especially while wearing the ring." Nazara gestured once again, and everything seemed to flicker...
Ty sat up, and looked around. He was amazed at the clarity of that strange dream. He shifted, and felt something under him. Standing up, he looked down at the bed to see a gold ring that seemed to glow slightly, and he realised that it was no dream.
He looked more closely at the ring, which had a small image of a dragon imprinted on the inner wall. The outer wall seemed to be smooth, until he looked more closely, and noticed strange markings, perhaps a script of some sort.
He knew what he had to do.
