Kyle swaps roles with a squirrel

The best way to ensure success is to swap with an animal, Kyle decided. If he swapped with an object, there was no way to ensure that someone would test the device on him or that he could swap with a person when their back was turned. And he really didn't want to spend the rest of his life as a tree.

After about half an hour of careful observation, Kyle noticed a squirrel running through the grass. He judged that the squirrel, about 8 inches tall, was just bigger than the device, so if he was in the squirrel's life he should have no problem picking up the device. Kyle made up his mind, and first selected himself, then aimed the device on the squirrel. He waited until it paused for a moment, then selected it and hit swap.

Kyle felt the odd buzzing feeling of reality shifting around him, and then found himself standing in waist-high grass. He was still naked, but now covered in an even layer of hair. He saw a giant squirrel in the distance, standing erect and motionless, maybe 40 feet tall. It was completely hairless, except for the absolutely huge afro on its head. The school buildings around him were even taller. Kyle quickly realized that he had shrunk to the size of the squirrel! Why had this happened? He hadn't changed size the other times he'd used the remote. Regardless of the reason, this would make his next steps much more difficult.

Kyle found the remote lying in the grass in front of him, now almost two-thirds his size. He moved over to it and attempted to grab it, but he couldn't quite get a good grip on its smooth surface. His hands wouldn't move quite like they were supposed to, almost like he was wearing mittens, and he had long pointed nails that made grabbing anything hard. He finally got the heavy remote clutched between his hands, but realized as he practiced aiming it that he would have a hard time accurately selecting anything.

As he was doing this, the sun had set and the light was beginning to fade. It was probably best to seek shelter for the night.
