Antonio “Tony” Martinez was 13 year Mexican immigrant boy. He had brown hair, dark caramel skin, and a strong frame for a boy his age as a result of helping his father in the fields during the summer. Tony was a bit overwhelmed by his current situation. He never left the suburbs unless it was for a school funded trips. Now he was in the middle of a bustling, big city courthouse.
Skyler Godwin was a rather spoiled rich kid who was quite used to getting whatever he desired at the drop of a hat. He was currently stress free and playing on his custom-made Nintendo switch as the expensive lawyer his father hired continued argue on his behalf.
Skyler had been bullying Tony for quite some time. Not physically, but he had enough status to simply make the bigger kids do that part. Skyler was 13 as well and wasn’t buff for his age, just very well groomed.
He had gorgeous blonde hair that he cut short and that curled ever so slightly at the ends. His cute button nose and pristine skin made him look like he should be in commercials of some sort. However, he was short for his age and had a sort of a Napoleon complex.
Skyler hated Tony with a passion. The boy worked hard and managed to learn English on top of maintaining an impressive academic standing. He was also fairly popular amongst the middle school girls. Skyler constantly looked for ways of bullying the boy from social exclusion to downright sabotaging his school assignments
One day Skyler took his bullying antics too far. He decided to try something a bit more “flashy.” He intended to make use of a new flying, drone prototype his father bought him.
He attempted to drop a load of rotten cafeteria leftovers on Tony with the drone. The untested machine ended up horribly malfunctioning and instead fell straight towards Tony. He managed to get out of the way and only received a subtle scar on his right cheek.
“The unlicensed use of experimental technology in a school zone while minors are present.” Was the official description of Skyler’s crime.
The idea of a “body swap case” was not originally Tony’s. His lawyer worked on cases for minorities and discussed the idea with his parents. The lawyer convinced them that this type of case would yield the greatest benefits for Tony’s future. He even promised he’d do it at no charge if they didn’t win, and if they did win, his rate was very low.
The sound of the gavel being slammed crackled throughout the room.
“Young man, enough is enough! No games in my courtroom!” Judge Loggia yelled at Skyler, who simply rolled his eyes and put away his switch.
“Now for my verdict.” He cleared his throat.
“I find the defendant, guilty on all changes. Skyler Godwin will be placed in the body of Antonio Martinez and vice versa- for life.”
*Gasps filled the room*
“The act putting the lives of school-aged children in jeopardy with untested technology and the infliction of permanent damage to Mr. Martinez’s body contributed the most to this decision. On top of the swap, the Martinez family will be receiving a 1 million dollar compensation settlement for emotional distress. Skyler Godwin will have all monetary assets frozen for the first 5 years of the swap.”
“That’s fucken stupid!” Skyler yelled out. His lawyer attempted to calm him down but to no avail.
“You’ve had everything your entire life. Now there are two things you won’t be getting back, your body and your white privilege.” The judge slammed this gavel.
