The tests took a couple of hours. Larry seemed increasingly pleased, for exactly the same reason I was feeling increasingly dismal. It seemed like the muscle memory of this body had been retained entirely intact. Unless I was focusing hard on doing otherwise, my every move was my mother's.
The way I held my hands, wrists limp and with a tendency to touch my collarbone when speaking, just like her.
The way I walked, a swaying gait that veered into a waddle due to my thighs, just like her.
The way I smiled or laughed, just like her.
That last one was particularly crushing. They'd had me go online, find a funny video I liked, and then recorded my responses. My sense of humor was unchanged, so I hoped so, so hard that it meant I would keep that...but then they showed me a recording of myself, laughing. It could have been my mother cracking up at one of Dad's awful puns.
They had me do a few tasks. Simulating cooking and sewing, and a few other common things Mom did or hobbies she had that I never shared.
I did them all perfectly the first time, without thinking.
"I don't understand, how can I knit?! I never learned how to knit!"
"W-well, that's the fascinating thing, your mind may not have but your BODY did..."
He then launched into a long explanation about how my muscle memory was working. Apparently, among other things, I'd now throw a baseball like Mom did; apparently I could learn how to do it right again, but I'd be starting back up from the ground floor.
That, in and of itself, wasn't so bad, until they brought 'David' back in, and began discussing their collective results.
"Y-you see, essentially, you have all mechanical skills, but you will need to work at essentially everything else. Vocabulary, behaviors beyond the physical components."
'David' nodded and turned to me.
"Don't worry, Mom, Dad and I will make sure you learn everything you need to know about being Cathy. You'll be a perfectly trained stay-at-home mother in no time."
I blanch.
"But I don't want to-"
"Too bad, *Mom,* because that's what you are now. Understand?" he asked firmly, with the slightest hint of menace.
