“Well, looks like The Woods has fallen asleep,” Maya leans over to Max, “Are you as profoundly bored as I am?”
“Bored doesn’t begin to describe it,” Max grumbled, “I suppose you have an plan to make this more interesting?”
“I might,” Maya said, “If you’re game.”
“I’m willing to give anything a shot at this point,” Max sighed, “Short or erasing my soul or condemning myself to the underworld, anyway. Otherwise, what’ve I got to lose?”
“Not a whole lot, I’d wager,” Maya shrugged. She pulled what looked like an old, black leather bound book from her backpack. It was as thick as a college textbook, and was bound with a large belt and buckle.
“Excuse me, what is that thing?” Hank asked, walking over to them.
“Old book I found in the back of an antique store,” Maya explained, “I bought it to use as a knickknack for my bedroom because it looked like an old spell book. Looking through the pages, I found out that it actually was a spell book. I was planning on trying out some incantations or sigils to see if it worked.”
“That’s what Maya, Hector, Spitz and I were going to do before we got caught by The Woods,” Max added, resting his hands behind his head, “The only reason it’s only me and Maya here is because Hector and Spitz ratted us out to that old wench! Some friends those jackasses turned out to be.”
“Well you can have fun playing pretend with that book all you want,” Hank scoffed, “It’s not like those spells or anything are going to work. I’ll be over here working on a biology paper I was commissioned the other day.”
“Suit yourself,” Maya said as she unbelted the book. She turned to the first page which read:
“Write onto this page your minds desire, and this book will give you what you require.”
“Woah, look,” Max exclaimed pointing at the page, “The thing we wrote in there earlier disappeared. Do you think the book did that?”
“Could have,” Maya nodded, “I mean, it gave us spells for making fire when we wrote down that we wanted to set something on fire. Maybe it reset itself in case we wanted to try something else?”
“Ah, I can see that being handy,” Max mused, “So, any ideas?”
