As they stand by the play area, trying to decide what to do next, a boy about Kaitlin’s current age rushes over and shoves Laura. Laura loses her balance, falling on her diapered butt. She stares up at the boy in hurt surprise.
“Why?” she asks around her pacifier. The boy puts his hands on his hips and leans over her.
“Because you’re just a baby,” he sneers.
“Not baby!” Laura whines. The boy grins.
“Then why did you just poop?” he asks snidely. To her horror, Laura realizes that the fall caused her hold on her bowels to fail. To make it worse, she didn’t notice that she messed her diaper until it was pointed out to her. Devastated, uncomfortable, and the smell of poop finally reaching her nose, Laura spits out her pacifier and begins to wail.
“Back off!” Kaitlin snarls. She shoves the boy. “Leave her alone!”
“What are you gonna do about?” the boy asks her. Kaitlin clenches her small hands into fists. Normally, she wouldn’t even think about fighting with a kindergartener, but not only is she one right now, but her friend is currently sobbing from the boy picking on her.
“I’ll do thith!” Kaitlin shoves the boy again. The boy shoves her back. Quickly, the situation devolves into a full-on little kid brawl. Laura’s crying was already attracting attention, but now, all heads had turned to look at the fight between two kindergarteners.
