Laura wakes up, but not in a bed. She’s sitting up, and she can feel movement. She opens her eyes. She’s no longer in Alexis’ bed. She’s in a car seat, in her brother Dan’s car. And to make matters worse, both her bladder and bowel are begging for release.
“Oh, you’re awake!” Dan says cheerfully from the front seat. Laura squirms uncomfortably. “I get it, you’re probably confused, sweetie. Here’s what happened. When my family came home from vacation earlier and saw you in my daughter’s bed, we decided to let you sleep until the morning.”
“We thought you would wake up in time to have some breakfast, but you slept for a long time. You even slept through us putting you in the car! You must’ve been pretty tired, huh?”
“Yeah,” Laura mutters, thinking about the events of the day before. They would be enough to wear anyone out.
“You’re probably wondering where I’m taking you,” Dan says. Laura nods. “Don’t get scared, okay? I’m taking you to the police station.” Despite Dan telling her to not be scared, fear fills Laura. She’s being taken to the police station?
So shocked by the news, her tremulous hold on her bladder and bowel breaks. Pee fills her diaper, shortly followed by poop.
“Oh, did you just poopoo, honey?” Dan asks kindly. Laura nods tearfully. “I’m sorry, I told you not to be scared! Don’t worry, the police are going to take good care of you until they can find your parents.” Laura lets out a sob. She peed and messed herself in front of her younger brother, and now she’s being taken to the police station as an abandoned child.
“It’s okay, it’s okay!” Dan says quickly. The car comes to a stop. “We’re here. I’ll go ahead and change you right now, even before we go inside.”
