Not for the first time today, Tori wondered what she had gotten herself into. It was bad enough when the SUV that showed up at her apartment building had windows that were completely blacked out. She never even saw the driver. Still, she followed the instructions she had been sent and got in without bringing any personal belongings except her keys, ID, and the clothes on her back. Not even her phone could make the trip. It was even worse when she arrived at a remote heliport and had to enter the passenger compartment without even seeing the pilots, or anyone else for that matter.
What is this, some sort of super-spy black-ops ridiculousness? she thought to herself, but still boarded the military-looking helicopter. After all, it wasn't every day an aspiring geneticist could get a fully-paid internship, living expenses included, and a promise of better things to come. Tuition fees cost so much Tori was afraid she would not have enough money to finish her doctorate. Even eating was becoming a pinch at this point. The offer came at just the right time.
But she had to admit she was beginning to reconsider, although it was probably too late. After all, what kind of operation required this degree of secrecy? It was way beyond precautions against corporate sabotage. Had she gotten herself into some sort of bioweapons development program? That definitely wasn't her bailiwick. All she was focusing on was the genetic evolution of animals into humans. Theoretical and observational, not practical.
She had just about talked herself into trying to turn down the offer when she felt the helicopter descend, then touch down. The door to the passenger compartment slid open, but no one was there outside to greet her. Unsurprising, as the instructions had said to proceed to the facility. However, that also meant no one was there for her to ask how to get out of this gig.
Grabbing her luggage, Tori walked to the building entrance, which was fairly nondescript considering the level of security, apart from being rather large and without any windows facing the outside. As she neared, she noticed a security camera above the door, which opened as she came close. From the doorway, Tori saw what appeared to be a minimalistic waiting room. A single chair was inside the room, which had plain, white, unadorned walls. Furthermore, Tori could not see any exits apart from the door she entered. Giving a last glance back to direction of the helipad, Tori took a deep breath and walked in.
