Laura gets engrossed in the cartoons immediately. Kaitlin eyes her friend, sitting in a playpen in a diaper, sucking on a pacifier, clapping excitedly at a cartoon. She would never guess this toddler was an adult the day before. Kaitlin tries to enjoy the cartoons as well, but gets bored quickly. She slips off the couch and wanders into the kitchen.
“Can I help cook?” she asks. Anna looks over at her and smiles.
“Sorry, but you’re too little right now. Go watch TV.”
“They’re boring.”
“I’m sure you can find something else to occupy your time with, then,” Anna says, turning back to breakfast. Kaitlin sighs and goes back to the living room. Laura is still eagerly watching TV. As Kaitlin looks around, she spots the dollhouse she played with the night before. It’s better than nothing.
Kaitlin gets caught up in playing with the dollhouse as quickly as Laura became enamored with the children’s cartoons. Before she knows it, Anna walks into the living room and announces breakfast is ready. Kaitlin gets up and follows Anna, who has picked Laura up out of the playpen.
“I’ve already set your place up,” Anna says, nodding at a plate on the table with a pancake already cut into bite-sized pieces. Kaitlin sits down and eats. She watches with interest as Anna puts Laura in a highchair and spoonfeeds her baby food, then gives her a bottle of milk. While Laura drinks her bottle of milk, Kaitlin finishes her food. She pushes away her empty plate and looks at Anna.
“What are we doing nektht?” she asks. Anna takes the plate from her and brings it over to the sink to be washed. As she washes, she answers Kaitlin’s question.
