Laura is in the middle of an excitable game of tag when she feels a sudden pressure in her bowels. She instinctively stops running and squats. Her eyes widen as she realizes what she’s doing, but before she can even try to hold it in, her bowels evacuate. Immediately after she messes her diaper, her bladder lets loose, soaking it with pee. She stands back up, her diaper visibly sagging underneath her.
An adult who saw Laura mess and wet herself promptly swoops in.
“You look like you had an accident! Where’s your mommy?” the woman asks. Laura says the first lie that comes to mind.
“Food.” She meant to say “Getting food”, but the regression to a toddler seems to have reduced her ability to speak. Luckily, the woman understands her.
“When did she go get food?”
“Now.”
“She won’t be back for a while, then.” The woman scoops Laura up. “Let’s get you changed real quick. A little girl like you shouldn’t be in a dirty diaper for too long.” The woman walks over to her things, grabs a diaper bag off a chair, and the brings Laura into the woman’s bathroom. During Laura’s first diaper change in decades, women filter in and out of the bathroom. A few smile at Laura, most ignore her, and one little girl points at Laura and loudly announces that she’s wearing a poopy diaper.
The humiliation of being changed by a complete stranger makes the change feel much longer than it is, but Laura is eventually clean and in a fresh diaper. The woman pokes Laura’s nose playfully.
“All done!” The woman picks Laura up and brings her out of the bathroom.
