Too Late to Change Your Mind

Jeff heard what sounded like static come out of the computer speakers. Being the closest to the epicenter of the effect, things began to change rapidly. He looked at the progress bar on the screen and waited for it to proceed further.

He got up, turning around in a circle...photos of him and his friends and family vanishing from the walls of the room. It was hard to concentrate with that noise...He felt himself drowning in it..and suddenly decided he had to stop this...realizing he'd made a terrible mistake. He hadn't thought this through.

"Stop it..." he called out...despite the fact his computer didn't accept voice commands. "Stop.....Bark...." He began to bark at the computer. At the same time, the part of his brain that stored vocabulary words began to shrink... , and he couldn't understand anything on the screen or what button to press.

His clothes vanished, leaving him only with a collar, the tag on which had his name on it....not that he could read it. Panicked, he started to run....out the open door...despite the fact he'd closed and locked it before. As he ran down the stairs, he fell to all fours, his skeleton altering to accommodate locomotion at ground level, his neck shrinking and his head rolling to a new position. He ran for the front door, and discovered he couldn't open it...

Other items vanished and appeared in the room around him...a family photo on the wall was replaced with a new one. He could still hear the static growing louder in his head...despite the fact he was nowhere near what he thought was the source. What he didn't know was that it wasn't a real noise...it was all in his mind...

His vocabulary had nearly evaporated, leaving less than 150 words he even recognized...memories of what he'd learned in school were so incomprehensible to him as to be little more than a blur of images...parts of his brain previously dedicated to rational thinking began to work differently, processing inputs from his ears and nose, these inputs becoming more important to him.

He moved away from the door, the fear in his face suddenly evaporating, the light behind his eyes slowly dimming. His tongue dropped out of his mouth, which expanded into a goofy looking grin as his eyes glazed over. He could no longer remember what had made him run to the front door...no one was there.

He didn't think very much about it either, a moment later the small human, not yet two years old, was exploring the house as if he'd never seen it before.
