Caught up in playing, Laura loses track of time. When the last toddler is taken away by his parents, Laura looks outside. Her jaw drops. It’s dark outside. She’s completely missed the train! More importantly, she realizes that she’s left the dice case unattended. She quickly toddles over to where she left the dice and stuffs the case into the front of her romper.
With that problem taken care of, Laura sits on the floor and thinks, trying to come up with a new plan. As she thinks, she instinctively sucks on her thumb for comfort. A few children run past her to go play. Laura sits for at least fifteen minutes, trying to come up with a plan while children older than her play on the play structure.
Despite her best attempts to think of a course of action, Laura comes up blank. Tears prick the corners of her eyes at this realization, but she manages to keep herself from crying by sucking harder on her thumb. This coping mechanism eventually fails, however, when Laura feels a warmth spread through her diaper. Horrified to have wet herself, Laura begins to wail.
