You felt something rap against the back of your helmet. Seemed like someone behind you wanted your attention. You turned to face what looked like an old man mascot. He was dressed in similar armor to your own, minus the helmet. He had a grey eye-patch and a bushy mustache, and carried a wooden cane. Somehow, you recognized this mascot immediately.
"Master Kane," you say, kneeling before the old knight, "It's a pleasure to see you."
"Humph," Kane grunted, "So, seems you recognize your teacher, eh? Or your character does at any rate. You wouldn't happen to be the new 'hire' as it were, would you?"
"I... I guess so," you suppose, "You wouldn't happen to know what's going on here, would you?"
"First thing's first, boy," Kane stated, "What! Is your name?"
"Sir Hammer of Fantasy Kingdom, sir," you hear yourself regurgitate perfectly and enthusiastically, "Though Hamm for short is okay too. At least... that's the only name I remember having."
"Humph, well I should think so," Kane puffed, "That's the only name you've ever had!"
"I... what?" you're shocked to hear that response. "No, no! You've got it all wrong! I swear I wasn't always called this! I was never a mascot before now!"
Master Kane tutted and shook his head. "Ho boy, it's always the same with you newborns. Come, walk and talk with me." He walked past you, gesturing for you to follow. You followed him because one, he was your master, and two, he seemed like he knew a lot about this park.
"I suppose you might have noticed something about Whimsy World that most other theme parks don't do." Master Kane began, "Or rather what we don't do. Simply put, everything in this park is operated by us mascots. No human employees, just mascots from top to bottom."
"You're kidding," you said.
"Hammer, you're character's known me long enough to know that I never kid," Kane scolded, "Honestly, you wound me, boy!"
"O-oh! Sorry master!" you hastily apologize.
"Ah, forget it," Kane dismissed, "You still think that you were always a human before now. I'm sorry to break your spirit, boy, but you were born here in this park, and you live in this park."
"That... that can't be true!" you stammered, "Th-th-there has to be some other explanation!"
"Alright then," Kane humored, "How do you explain that other you leaving the park with your family? Betcha you thought they'd cloned and replaced you, huh?"
"I... huh? How did you..."
"I've been in this place long enough to know how you might be feeling," Kane explained, "Simply put, that's no clone. You are the clone. Well, not entirely. The whole truth of the matter is a lot of medical mumbo jumbo I'm not prepared to get into. The basic version of it is the park scanned your original's brain and put the copy into you. Think you get it, son?"
"I... Uhh..."
"Ah, you'll find out the nitty gritty soon," Kane dismissed, "For now though, back to the park itself. I suppose you understand that this place is only a couple of months old and already the talk of the country, yes? That's partly because it appeared from nowhere, and partly because everything here is operated by us mascots. That is, as they say, the selling point. Whimsy World is all about it.
"Of course, I suspect that this place is more than just a theme park," Kane continued, "My theory is that this place is a living, breathing organism, just like you and me. Why is it here? Where did it come from? How is this place alive? I don't know exactly, but I can guess at the answers.
"Why is the park here? To entertain people, chiefly children at the moment but this place is always growing. It's one of those "bigger-on-the-inside and smaller-on-the-outside magical places. This place is a child itself, and its attractions reflect that fact. Pretty soon, the park is going to expand to cater to more demographics as it grows up, until one day this place truly has something for all ages. Fun-For-The-Whole-Family is the turn of phrase I believe. Of course, why does it entertain people? The same reason all theme parks entertain people. If it didn't, this place would surely perish. This place survives on the joy that the guests produce, and there's nothing that the park loves more than happy guests. This place exists for the sole purpose of bringing joy into the world, plain and simple.
"Now, where did it come from? I don't know for sure. I do know that it appeared magically, so perhaps this park is a magical creature? Oh if only I knew for sure. Also, how is this place alive in the first place? That I also can only guess at. Is it magic? Alien science? An incomprehensible old one? If you ask me, I say this place is magic."
"Magic? You mean we're all made of magic?" you asked the aging mentor.
"That's how I see it," Kane nodded, "Otherwise this place is basically built to survive just about anything. It has its own power supply separated from the city power grid, its own plumbing and sewage treatment center, and even factories that make merchandise, farms that supply food... the whole works. You name it, this place has it. I wouldn't be surprised if the city requested to use Whimsy World as a shelter during times of disaster."
"I would be happy to volunteer if it meant helping folks out," you offer, and you felt as though you meant it too.
"I'm glad you feel that way," Kane nodded sagely, "Selflessness is one of the virtues we knights strive for. So tell me, boy. What is your number one job as a proud Whimsy World mascot?"
"I live for the smiles of our guests," you answer, "Nothing makes me happier than ensuring they have the most magical experience we can offer!"
"Humph, good lad!" Kane agreed vigorously for an old timer, "Well then, enjoy your night and get plenty of rest, Sir Hammer. We've a long day of merriment ahead of us. In the meantime, I'd recommend getting to know your fellow mascots. You're going to be spending an awful lot of time around them. They are your family after all, and I do mean everyone here, not just the Fantasy Kingdom denizens. Do keep a smile in your heart, alright boy?"
You nodded in affirmative as you parted ways with the old knight. He gave you a lot to think about, but you figure you should find other people who might have a clue about this park so that you can compare notes. In the meantime, there's still a good while left until bedtime, so mingling might be the best idea.
