Laura arrives at the train station and boards without major issue. An attendant is called to take her to the car for unattended children. In the car, Laura’s diaper is checked, a boy about twelve or thirteen is instructed to keep an eye on Laura, and Laura is left to her own devices.
Laura toddles over to a pile of toddler toys in one corner and sits down. She lets out a sigh of relief, having successfully made it onto the train. As she double-checks her items, however, she realizes that she left the dice at the restaurant. She jumps to her feet in a panic. The train pulls away, the sudden movement making Laura fall heavily onto her butt.
Distraught to have lost the dice, and startled slightly by the fall, Laura bursts into tears. The boy tasked with watching her sets down his book and walks over.
“What’s wrong?” he asks tiredly. Laura tries to pull herself together, but can’t. “If you won’t tell me, I’ll have to get the attendant.” Instinctively, Laura puts her thumb into her mouth and sucks on it fiercely. This calms her sufficiently for the boy to leave her alone again.
Each time Laura removes her thumb, intending to pick up her phone to make a plan, she feels tears spring to her eyes again, so she has to resume sucking to stay calm. About halfway through the train ride, the attendant returns with snacks. Laura is given a bottle of milk, which she sucks down eagerly. The attendant checks her diaper again.
“Wow, still dry! What a big girl!” the attendant remarks, making Laura blush.
The rest of the train ride passes by quickly. Laura finally calms down enough to stop sucking her thumb by the time they arrive at the station. When she gets to her feet, however, she feels warmth spread through her diaper. To stave off getting upset again, Laura pops her thumb back into her mouth.
The unattended children are herded off the train. Laura decides to utilize the same method that allowed her to escape the restaurant. She points at a random man.
“Dada!” she chirps. The attendant looks over.
“Okay, sweetie, go on over to your daddy, then,” she says. Laura toddles away. Luckily, the attendant is too busy with the other children to follow up on Laura’s “father”.
Once outside of the station, Laura looks up the directions again, still sucking on her thumb. The magic shop is only about a block away. She stuffs her phone and wallet back into her romper and sets off yet again.
Somehow, no one stops her. Laura arrives at the magic shop, waits for a customer leaving to open the door, and slips inside. To her surprise, the boy tasked with watching her on the train is there, sitting in a corner of the store next to a playpen, reading his book. Laura toddles up to the front desk.
“Hewwo?” she calls. The employee behind the desk looks down at her and smiles.
“Hello, sweetheart. What can I do for you?” he asks. Laura removes her thumb from her mouth.
“I small.”
“I can tell.”
“Dice,” Laura adds. The boy from the train looks up at that. The employee frowns. “Dice make widdle.”
“The…” The employee sighs, kneading his forehead. “Great. You’re the second case of the dice going rogue that I’ve seen today.”
“Hewp?” Laura asks timidly. The employee nods.
“Yes, I’ll be able to help. Do you have the dice on you?” he asks. Laura shakes her head. “Okay. Well, in that case, I can’t freeze the spell or revert you to your proper age until either the dice are found or their bond to you is broken.” The employee looks Laura over. “How long ago did you lose the dice?”
“Few houws.”
“Okay. Your bond to the dice should automatically be broken by midnight, since you won’t have touched them for some time. If they roll after that, you won’t get younger.”
“What woll now?”
“If they roll before then, you’ll get younger,” the employee says apologetically. Laura’s thumb goes back into her mouth to be sucked on for comfort. “But even if they roll before then, your bond to them will still be broken at midnight. Do you understand?” Laura nods. “Good. Now-”
The employee cuts himself off as he spots Laura squat. Laura’s horrified that she might be messing herself again, but to her relief, only her bladder lets loose. She stands back up, her diaper squishing under her.
“I wet.”
“Yeah.” The employee comes around the counter and picks Laura up. “Mason?” The boy in the corner looks up. “I know you were listening to this young woman. You know that her situation is similar to yours.” Mason nods. Laura’s eyes widen. “Could you change her for me, please?”
“Uh, I’ve never changed a diaper before,” Mason says, taking Laura from the employee.
“It’s fairly straightforward, especially since she’s only wet. Just take care of it, I have to call the boss and help any customers that come in.” The employee goes back to the counter. Mason brings Laura into a bathroom in the back, where he proceeds to clumsily change her. He gets visibly embarrassed by this, though Laura takes it in stride. She’s not sure whether it’s because she’s already become used to diaper changes, or if it’s because she knows he’s also younger than he’s supposed to be.
After the change, Mason brings Laura back into the main area of the shop and puts her in the playpen. He then sits on his chair and resumes reading his book. Laura spots a pacifier on the floor of the playpen. She eagerly pops it into her mouth. It’s much better than sucking on her thumb. Exhausted by the events of the day, Laura curls up into a ball and falls asleep, suckling away at her pacifier.
