He heard noises. People talking. He instinctively swam over to the deep end of the pool, where the shade from the patio roof made it hard to see through the water. There, he calmly positioned himself near the bottom while his ears somehow heard every word above him perfectly.
"Kids, go inside and start unpacking!"
"Honey, what's that in the pool?"
"Looks like wet clothes. It's probably that lazy kid who lives next door. I told him to stop washing his crap in our pool."
"Well, do you want to go get him?"
"No. I told that little shit off already. In fact, I'm taking these clothes and burning them, because they're on my property and I own them."
Jeff did his best to keep out of sight while his neighbor fished his clothes out of the pool and threw them in a box. Then he wiped his hands and went inside for dinner. Jeff felt his own hunger and remembered that he needed to find something to eat. Maybe he could try the garbage can?
He waited until the dead of night, when the family was fast asleep and only the light of the moon was still shining. Jeff made some mental calculations, swam in circles a couple of times to calm his nerves, and then gently hoisted himself out of the pool. He was concerned about being able to breathe, so he took a discarded plastic bag that he'd found lying on the pool deck and wrapped it around his head, making sure to tie it as tightly as possible so the water wouldn't leak out. It did so anyway, but he figured there would be just enough time for him to find something edible and go back into the water.
Moving slowly, he made his way to the can and found bits of fish and lobster that had been thrown out from dinner. He grabbed as much as he could hold in one arm and began to turn around when he heard footsteps. Just inches away from him was a human foot.
At least he thought it was human. The changes should have been finished by now.
In any case, his eyes adjusted enough to the darkness for him to make out that the shape was most likely a female. And what's more, she was wearing pajamas. Until she took them off and started making her way to the pool. And that was when she nearly tripped over Jeff's tail.
In his mind, Jeff knew what was about to happen. The girl would realize that the thing she tripped over was wet and slimy. Then she'd look down and see him, and scream. Her parents would come running, and his life would be over. He panicked. He dropped everything he was carrying, and with a swift series of motions, he leaped straight at her, grabbed her with his clawed hands, and swiftly plunged into the pool.
She struggled for a while, but then Jeff, without thinking, put her mouth to his, allowing him to share his oxygen with her. They stayed like that for a while, just locked together as she remained perfectly still out of absolute terror. All the while, Jeff tried to think of how he could fix this.
