Laura won’t be able to get to the magic store alone at this age. She probably can’t even take care of herself. She’ll need help. She toddles over to the nearby landline, picks the phone off the hook, and dials the cell number of her coworker, Kaitlin.
“Hello?” Kaitlin’s voice says. Laura swallows.
“Kaitwin, it’s me. Lowa.”
“Uh, what?”
“Magic dice make me widdle.”
“Look, kid, I don’t know who you are, but-”
“Pwease, hewp me,” Laura begs. Kaitlin is silent. “It’s me, Lowa Petews. We work together. You have a dog named Wiley and a dwive a bwack Toyota Camwy.”
“Hmm.” Laura crosses her fingers, closing her eyes, praying that Kaitlin will believe her. Or at least come by, so that she can have a chance to properly convince her. “Where are you?” Laura rattles off the address. “Got it. I’ll be there in ten.” Laura hangs up the phone, relieved.
Hopefully, even if Kaitlin doesn’t believe her, she’ll be able to convince her of her identity. Laura gulps. She hopes that it won’t take rolling the dice again to convince Kaitlin.
Laura toddles over to the front door to wait for Kaitlin to arrive. Finally, the doorbell rings. Laura opens the door.
