Oliver goes over to an abandoned diaper bag nearby and rummages through it. Thankfully, she finds a pair of training pants, which she pulls up immediately. She continues to look through the bag and finds a pair of overalls, a T-shirt with a cupcake on it, and a pair of sandals.
Oliver grabs the outfit and ducks behind a bush to change out of her wet dress. She’s curious about how she looks. But she shakes away that curiosity for now. Right now, she needs to focus on getting that ring back. Before she can leave the park, however, she feels herself being lifted in the air.
“Olivia, what are you doing?” asks the person holding her. Oliver, or rather, Olivia, turns her head. The person holding her is a teenager she used to babysit, Kimberly. Olivia can’t think of a single thing to say. She opens and closes her mouth silently. “You went through the bag and changed your clothes again, didn’t you? You’re not supposed to do that.” Kimberly squeezes Olivia’s butt. “And you’re not wearing a diaper!”
“No need,” Olivia says quickly. Her eyes widen as she realizes that her ability to speak has been reduced.
“Yes, need,” Kimberly retorts, already carrying Olivia over to the diaper bag she took the clothes from. “Or did you forget that the last time you wore big girl pants, you poopied in them?”
“I-”
“Come on, let’s put some proper protection on you.” Kimberly lays Olivia on a changing mat on the ground and removes her clothes and training pants, then tapes a diaper onto her before putting the clothes back on. “There! Now, stop stealing your brother’s big boy pants, okay?” Olivia can only nod silently. “Good girl.” Kimberly checks her watch. “Oh, time to head back.”
“But-”
“No buts, missy.” Kimberly digs a pacifier out of the diaper bag and pops it into Olivia’s mouth. She sucks on it instinctively, then is buckled into a stroller by Kimberly. Kimberly pushes the stroller out of the park. Olivia sucks urgently on her pacifier, her mind racing.
Clearly, reality changed. She’s not sure how, and she’s not sure she wants to know how this reality differs from the one she knows. But her options are limited.
