There wasn’t enough time to do anything. Kaitlin swallows nervously. She’ll just have to convince one of the daycare workers of their identities. She knows one particular coworker, Lisa, very well. Hopefully, Lisa is the first one to arrive.
The door to the daycare opens. A woman enters. Kaitlin lets out a sigh of relief. It’s Lisa.
“Litha,” Kaitlin calls. Lisa looks over. Her eyes widen.
“Hi, sweetie,” Lisa coos, walking over. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m Kaitlin Monroe. Your coworker.”
“My- what?”
“I can prove it,” Kaitlin says quickly. “You got off maternity leave lath week, after having a thon named Eric. You have an older daughter named Thuthan. And I told you a good plathe to go for Italian food. You like the eggplant parmethan, but I like the thuffed thellth.”
“I…” Lisa seems blindsided by the amount of things Kaitlin’s rattled off. Before she can respond, Laura grunts softly. Lisa and Kaitlin look over. Laura is still asleep, but grunting quietly, her face scrunched in effort. After a few moments, she lets out a sigh. A stench permeates from her. Kaitlin grimaces. Hopefully Laura messing herself won’t weaken their case.
“Thath Laura Peterth,” Kaitlin says. “We found thome magic dithe that made uth thmall.” Lisa silently picks Laura up and brings her over to a changing table, where her dirty diaper is removed and placed with a clean one. Still sleeping, Laura is then carried to a crib and gently set inside. Lisa goes back to Kaitlin.
“Do you believe me?” Kaitlin asks timidly. She holds her breath as she waits for Lisa to answer.
