They need to leave before they get caught. Kaitlin goes over to Laura and shakes her awake. Laura’s eyes open.
“We need to go,” Kaitlin says hurriedly. She grabs Laura’s hand and pulls her towards the front door. The door opens. Kaitlin and Laura hide, waiting for the daycare worker to walk past. Before the door can close, Kaitlin and Laura slip out. The daycare workers are the first people to arrive in the morning, so they shouldn’t be seen by anyone else.
As quietly as possible, Kaitlin and Laura sneak out of the building. Once outside, they go to the back of the building, where they won’t be seen by anyone coming in for work.
“Okay, we need a plan,” Kaitlin says. Laura nods. She squats where she’s standing and begins to grunt. “Laura!”
“I heaw. You talk.”
“But you’re pooping!”
“So?” Laura asks. She grunts again. “What do?”
“Um…” Kaitlin looks away from her pooping friend, trying to think. It’s not easy, however, as Laura’s grunts are distracting. As is the discovery that Laura has mentally regressed. That’s the only explanation for why she wouldn’t care that she’s having an accident. Kaitlin glances at Laura. It might not even be an accident. Laura might have intended on messing herself.
“What do?” Laura repeats. She grunts loudly.
“I gueth we get a new diaper for you,” Kaitlin mumbles.
“No need.”
“You’re pooping!”
“I fine,” Laura says firmly. “Where go?”
“Well, if we don’t get you a new diaper, we thould go to the mall or the magic thore,” Kaitlin says slowly. Laura grunts one last time and then stands, her diaper sagging under her. “Are you thure you don’t need a change?”
“Yeah!” Laura chirps. Kaitlin looks at her toddler friend doubtfully. “We go now!”
