Just dressing up girly won’t be enough, and a preschooler outfit might not be different enough from a kindergartener to be a good disguise. Reluctantly, Laura selects a pair of overalls meant for a toddler. The overalls are gender neutral; neither overly girly nor overly boyish. A more masculine outfit might be a better disguise, but toddlers get their diapers or training pants checked and changed. If the worst comes to worst and that happens to Laura, it might raise questions if she’s dressed like a boy.
In additions to the overalls and plain T-shirt, Laura locates a diaper that fits her. To her surprise, the largest diaper size available is actually too large for her and she has to size down. She’s smaller for her age than she thought.
Laura takes off her current outfit, tapes on the diaper, and pulls on the overalls and T-shirt. She walks around the store for a bit, toddling due to her diaper, looking for accessories that will sell her disguise better. She slips on a pair of flipflops, finds a stuffed animal, and, with great reluctance, pops a pacifier into her mouth. With that done, she toddles to the changing room to look at her reflection.
The person staring back at her is decidedly a toddler, with a diaper bulge showing under the overalls, and very gender neutral. Without knowing beforehand, Laura wouldn’t be able to tell whether she’s a boy or girl. Satisfied by her disguise, she begins to head for the door. Before she can leave, however, the door opens.
