In the sleepy college town that surrounds Fielder College for Women, the locals are an odd, peery sort of folk. Nobody likes to admit their town is entirely dependant on the economic treading water that the school brings, so townies are somewhat resentful of the girls who attend.
Over the years, this resentment has blossomed into outright superstition. Rumours surrounding "the Fielder look," the odd features that supposedly typify the student body, run rampant. Maybe it's the set of the eyes. Maybe it's an odd protrusion in the teeth. Nobody can put their finger on it, but most of the townies are sure that it isn't a good thing. Children are discouraged from visiting the campus by their parents, which of course only makes them want to do so more. By the time they reach high school, this desire has germinated into outright rebellion, particularly in girls, who wish they could make friends with the eccentric students of Fielder.
At Fielder, the students could care less what the townsfolk think of them. Fielder is one of the schools that puts the liberal in liberal arts, and the brazen attitude of the student body typifies that.
Lately, however, the students have sensed what they can only define as loss, as if something deeply sacred and personal was taken away from them after the rough storm that federal disaster relief forces had to be called in on.
Nobody is sure exactly what they've lost...
