"I love it, but I want to live in the big city as a mermaid," answered Amanda.
"How can we do that!?"
"We can do anything, silly." Amanda played with the ring as she recited her wish: "I wish we lived in a big city, that we were rich and famous, and that everyone took it for granted that we were a mermaid and merman."
Suddenly (was it not one of her fondest wishes?) there was a flash of light, and when it cleared we were in an indoor pool, taking up a whole floor of a skyscraper. The walls were all floor-to-ceiling windows. I reluctantly let go of Amanda, swam to the edge of the pool, and pulled myself up for a closer look. There were buildings all around, and I was pretty sure it was Manhattan.
I looked back at Amanda, who was swimming around underwater, where she stayed long enough that I knew we could breathe underwater. When she surfaced (what a sight!), I asked, "So we're famous, huh? What for?"
