The Magic Shop

Wild as a wolf!

added 3 years ago A Mental Canine

Rick sniffed around to get a better understanding of his surroundings. He was very hungry after his change. He'd better try not to get too worked up over the mismatch between his certainty that he needs to be human and his fading comprehension of that need. Confusing needs aren't food. Food is food. Food will fill his tummy. Food is good.

Before leaving, he angled himself around and kicked up one of his legs over the spell book. He thought he should probably leave a little layer of urine on it to claim his ownership. He knew he would never have done this to a book before he came out here, but how else would anyone have known which books were his? Warm liquid trickled out from Rick's sheath and splashed onto the pages. The scent of his own pheromones gently wafted into his nostrils. How satisfying!

As he wandered away from this little clearing less than a thousand feet from his human home, he made frequent stops to sniff those urine markings he'd detected after his sense of smell changed. Each time, he found it easy to summon just enough urine to leave his own mark. So many animals had chosen these spots to announce their presence to the forest, and it was only logical that he should leave a reply now that he was here. Rick thought about his human friends whom he was already starting to miss. They couldn't understand his scent markings, and if he were still human, he wouldn't understand theirs. They would open up their mouths and make complicated noises about how they felt or what they wanted to do. If they wanted to communicate without immediate contact, they would use little plastic things with flat glowing surfaces they could touch. It all seemed so strange in hindsight, and yet also so normal, since it had been his everyday life up to this point.

Ricky realized how intellectually unprepared he was to survive out here in the wilderness. He'd spent his whole life learning about things that didn't make sense to him now, but he'd never learned how to find food in the woods. And yet his new senses instincts told him everything he needed to know in the moment. For example, he could smell rabbits down in their burrows. He knew hew could eat those. As a human, he would have visited big structures in order to get meat that other humans had killed, and even then he would expect to spend a long time heating and cooling it before he could eat it. The idea of grabbing a live animal, killing it with his claws and teeth, and eating its warm blood and muscle tissue would have disgusted him. But right now the smell of live flesh was making his stomach rumble.

It wasn't too long before Rick had successfully chased down a previously unsuspecting rabbit and had devoured its flesh. His mouth was bloody and the scent of kill was still on him. He found a spot close to the water to rest for a bit, and it felt nice. Before lying down, he got a few tongue-fulls of water out of the stream to quench his thirst and let out some more of his urine to claim his spot. Lying down to rest himself up from his confusing first day as a wolf, Ricky curled up on his belly, rested his head on his paws, and wrapped his tail around himself up to his snout. He kept his eyes open and looked at the bushy tail one more time before he drifted off to sleep. It was part of what made him a wolf, and it seemed so strange when he first got it, but here he was using it to keep himself comfy out in the woods. Maybe tomorrow, everything would be normal, whatever that means for humans or wolves.
