The relatively short trip to Nicola's house had been a distressing one for James. Her purse had been zipped shut with him inside it so he was unable to see where he was being taken and the muffled, indecipherable voices of nearby humans he could hear offered no clue either.
When he was eventually released from his less than ideal mode of transport and his eyes had reacclimatised to the light, he was relieved to find himself in the relatively safe surroundings of Nicola's bedroom. He had been there before so everything was somewhat familiar though naturally much bigger than usual. He was sat on the small table she used to apply her make up and do her hair and, for the first time since being transformed, he was able to see himself in the mirror she kept there. He was a remarkably ordinary looking field mouse. If Nicola decided to leave him like this, it would be impossible for anyone to know any different. He just hoped that wasn't her plan.
It was at that point the girl in question came over and sat at the table in front of him. Though it was invisible to him she was holding the remote.
"From now on James can understand me, but no other human" Nicola began "and turn him into an adorable white rabbit!"
James felt himself growing again. It was a physically less dramatic transformation than the previous two he had been subjected to, but watching it play out in the mirror was a surreal and disturbing experience.
"I still have your phone. I hope you don't mind but I've texted your housemates to say you are out of town for the weekend so it looks like I have you all to myself for a while. Won't that be fun!"
Nicola stroked the fur on James' back delicately. He hated that it felt so good.
"You know, when I was a little girl I desperately wanted a pet rabbit, but we didn't have the money" Nicola smiled "so thanks for indulging me. You really do look adorable like that!"
At that moment there was a knock on the unlocked door to Nicola's room. Before waiting for a response an attractive, dark haired young woman entered. It was Lucy, her housemate. James had been introduced to her before, but as with most things right now she was far bigger than usual.
"Hey Nicola, about this months rent we've got to pay a little extra for...is that a rabbit?"
"Yeah, sorry I'm just looking after it for a friend" Nicola apologised.
"Well, that's fine but it will have to go out in the hutch in the garden with mine."
"Are you sure, I mean it's a little cold outside" Nicola asked hopefully.
"Not for a rabbit" Lucy responded "my three lived there all through the winter quite happily. They aren't like humans you know"
"I know but.." Nicola hesitated then pointed the remote at her housemate "Lucy forgets she saw anything and leaves"
"What are you doing, I don't have time for your dumb jokes" Lucy sighed "I'll be checking last thing tonight and first thing tomorrow morning and there had better be four rabbits in that hutch both times, ok?"
James had no idea what else Lucy was saying to Nicola before she left, but from the half of the conversation he could understand he knew where he was going.
"Sorry mate, it's just for one night" Nicola reasoned as she placed him down into the sapcious wooden hutch in the shared garden, where Lucy kept her own pets, a few minutes later. There were three other rabbits watching him with interest, all of them female it seemed.
"I'll be back early tomorrow" Nicola smiled before retreating to the warmth of the house with the other humans.
