Laura can’t stay in a diaper any longer. What she’s been through is too humiliating. She needs something to change into. As she looks around, she spots a clothesline in the backyard of a nearby house. There’s a school uniform on it that looks to be her size. She sneaks over and grabs the uniform. Nearby there’s a pair of children’s boxers and shoes that look to go with the uniform.
After quickly slipping on the outfit, Laura goes to the sidewalk and strolls down the street, doing her best to act casual. No one comes looking for her or the outfit. She goes back to her brother’s house, grabs her things, and sets off for the magic shop after looking up the address. She’s done with this. Being a kid has lost all its appeal.
Just as Laura spots the magic shop across the street, someone grabs her arm. She looks behind her. It’s a severe looking older woman. She pales.
“Is there something wrong?” she asks. The woman scowls.
“You can’t skip class, child. Come on.” Laura tries to resist, but is nonetheless dragged over to a nearby Catholic school. Laura’s heart sinks. Of course. It would be just her luck to grab a uniform for a school that she would have to pass. The woman drags Laura to the front of the school. It looks like the school is segregated based on gender; there are two doors. One has a symbol for girls, the other has a symbol for boys.
Technically, Laura’s a girl. But she’s wearing a boy’s uniform. Despite herself, Laura’s curious as to which side of the school the teacher is taking her.
