Just as Laura and Mason begin to make their escape plan, Laura hears a voice speak.
“Five years you have walked this Earth. Now this number is but two. Each roll of the dice shall return more of what you have lost.” Laura lets out a soft squeak. She shrinks out of her training pants and clothes. Her eyes widen in panic. Someone’s going to get suspicious.
“Finally, shift relief,” sighs a voice. Laura and Mason look over. The person manning the front desk is being replaced by someone else. “By the way, we’ve got a little girl over there who hasn’t been registered in the system yet.” The front desk worker points in the direction of Laura and Mason.
“Got it,” says the new person, a bored looking young man. His coworker leaves the daycare. The man comes over to Laura and Mason. “Hey, sweetie,” he croons, crouching down to look more closely at Laura. “What’s your name?”
“Lowa,” Laura squeaks. The man nods. She’s hit by a sudden bolt of inspiration. She points at Mason. “Bruvver.”
“He’s your brother?” the man asks. Laura and Mason nod. “Are you two twins?”
“Yes,” Mason says.
“And how old are you?” Mason and Laura both hold up two fingers. “Two. Got it. And your name, buddy?”
“Mason.”
“Mason and Laura.” The man straightens to his full height. “I’ll make sure that’s in the system properly, and then you look like you need some better fitting clothes, Laura.” The man walks away.
“Good luck,” Laura whispers to Mason. Mason nods, knowing that she meant it was good luck that she hadn’t been checked in yet. “Now what?”
“You change,” Mason says quietly. “Then plan.” Laura nods. The man returns. He picks Laura up, brings her over to a changing table, and puts her in a thick diaper, as well as pink overalls to match Mason’s. Laura is brought back to Mason.
“Wow, with the matching clothes, it’s obvious you’re twins,” the man remarks. He ruffles Laura’s hair. “Play nice, kiddies. I’ll be back for diaper checks soon.” Mason and Laura turn to each other.
“Now plan,” Laura says firmly. Mason nods. However, before they can begin planning in earnest, they are interrupted by…
