The wedding prank goes off without a hitch. Jess delights in Jack’s complete and utter shock when she walks into the room and soaks up the attention she gets after the ceremony. People can’t stop fussing over her. She’s stolen the spotlight away from her brother, just as she intended.
Mom isn’t pleased whatsoever by the prank, however. Before they head to the reception, she takes Jess into the bathroom and scolds her thoroughly. Jess takes the scolding in stride. She’s still come out on top.
At the reception, Jack comes over to their table to talk to Mom. Mom asks a cousin to take Jess to the area reserved for children to play in. Sitting in the area, surrounded by children who should be smaller than her but are now much larger, Jess watches Jack and Mom talk. Jack has a vicious grin she recognizes. Mom’s expression shifts from trepidation to interest to pure glee during the course of the conversation. Jess is filled with dread.
Finally, Jack comes over and picks her up. He brings her back to the table she was sitting at with Mom. Mom takes Jess from him. Jack sits across the table, still grinning deviously.
“Mom and I had a great conversation, little sister,” he says. Jess swallows her nerves.
“Oh?” she squeaks. Jack nods.
“Yes. And it has to do with this note I found.” He slides a note across the table. Jess reads it with a slight frown. Her jaw drops. “Judging by your expression, you didn’t mean for this to be permanent, but it looks like it is.”
“I can’t raise a child all over again,” Mom says. “I’m done with that.” She smiles at Jack. “Jack, on the other hand, just got married. He and his lovely new wife are eager to start the next chapter of their lives: parenthood.”
“What we’re saying, in case you can’t get it through your tiny little skull,” Jack says, leaning over the table, his grin now downright predatory, “is that your prank didn’t work out the way you wanted, daughter.” The last word is a snarl. Jess’s heart drops to her feet. “It might take a little work to figure out the adoption process, but my new brother-in-law is a lawyer. You better get used to calling me daddy.”
The mixture of horror and fear rising in Jess results in her bladder letting loose, flooding her diaper with pee. Mom shifts slightly.
“Someone peed,” she announces loudly. She sticks a finger down the back of Jess’s diaper. “You soaked this,” she says, her voice still much louder than it needs to be. “Little Jessie needs a change!”
“I’ll change Jessie,” Jack says, getting to his feet. He takes Jess, or rather, Jessie now, from Mom. Jack stops by a table with a baby and asks for changing supplies. As he’s speaking, Jessie’s bowels empty into her diaper with a loud fart. “Ooh, Jessie’s stinky!” Jack coos at her. In her horror and shock, Jessie doesn’t move. Armed with diaper supplies, they enter the bathroom, Jack chortling. “This is great! You’re pooping and peeing yourself. Your prank backfired in the worst possible way, Jessie.” Jack lays Jessie on the changing table. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you the best part about Rachel and me adopting you.”
