Somewhere In The Mountains of Idaho

added by Joey Johnston 3 years ago O

It was a long fall and Luke still didn't know how Nick could easily make the 40 foot drop to the water below so effortlessly whenever the went to the pool at the bottom of the mine pit. Luke tried to recall how he made it down to the water last time; he was pushed by Nick for taking so long, but this time Nick was already in the water below him motioning him to jump. Luke hesitated, something just felt off this time.
Looking around he saw exactly what could be expected; the trees blew in the wind along the mine ridges, wildflowers danced in the wind, a few vultures could be seen far in the distance, traces of contrails dotted the horizon( well the horizon of the mine). The Lincoln Mine was at one point one of the most dangerous places in Northern Idaho. Three decades of digging into the earth had causes numerous chemicals to be exposed to the rain, and had poisoned the water supply of a few communities downstream, birds that drank from the pond could be found dead miles away. However it was one of The EPA's greatest success stories; through lawsuits, more regulations, bailouts and handouts you could hardly tell anything was dangerous about this place now. If you gave it another ten years it would probably just look just like everywhere outside the mine. There were remnants of human activity though( more than just a gigantic hole in the Earth), a large pipe stretched over the pond( the very thing he was standing on about to use as a diving board) and every now and then Nick or Luke would stub there toes on a piece of chicken fence, nail, and even one time a the rim of a wheel.
Luke had been so lost in his thoughts that he forgot where he was, he looked down at the water to find Nick. But he was no where to be found. A set of panic set in, he had to rush in and save his best friend, if fear had been holding him back before now the only thing holding him back was the possibility of being dragged under the water himself.
His fears of mortal danger were relieved but the fear itself was still present as he felt the slight tremor of the steel pipe coming from the opposite end, Luke turned and was greeted by Nick tackling him off the pipe with a big smile on his face. The separated in midair and Luke flung into a dive formation entering the cool pool of blue.
