“Of course, baby girl!” mom coos. She takes Jess’s hand. “Let’s find someone to change you; mommy is too busy to do that right now.” Mom leads Jess through the party, clearly taking her time, letting Jess sit in her messy diaper as long as possible. By the time they find a woman with a diaper bag, Jess is near tears from the smell and sensation of walking in a poop-filled diaper.
“Kylie?” mom asks. The woman – Kylie – turns around. She spots Jess and beams.
“It’s the flower girl!” Kylie says sweetly.
“Yes, but she doesn’t smell as good as the flowers she tossed,” mom says with a laugh. “Jess had an accident. I don’t have the time to change her right now. Would you be willing to handle that for me?”
“No problem!” Kylie chirps. She picks Jess up. “I’ll find you after I’m done changing her.”
“Thank you so much,” mom gushes. Kylie grabs her diaper bag and carries Jess away, into a bathroom. Jess remains completely silent as she is laid on a changing table and her clothes removed. She’s never met Kylie before. Hopefully, if she stays quiet, Kylie won’t have any reason to suspect she’s not a normal toddler.
“Wow, you’re so well-behaved,” Kylie remarks as she removes Jess’s dirty diaper. She wipes her down. Jess shivers at the cold baby wipes. “My little boy Tyson pitches a fit whenever we change him.” Apparently, being quiet made Jess stick out more, not less. But it’s too late to change her tactic now.
“All done!” Kylie chirps, taping a fresh diaper onto Jess. She redresses Jess. “You’re such a good girl!” Kylie brings Jess back to the main reception area. After wandering around for a few moments, she spots mom. “Mary, your little girl is all cleaned up.”
“Thank you so much, Kylie.”
“Do you want to take her back?” Kylie asks. Mom smiles.
“See, the thing about that is…”
