Just being in the campground had made Amanda's pulse pound.
It was a strange place, surrounded by thick fog. When she emerged into the campground, she couldn't be sure if it was day or night.
She couldn't stay for long, as disquieting as the place's effect on her was. Questioned the owner of the campground for awhile, and found out about some researchers from Fielder that apparently got into an accident in the gorge. The owner was tight-lipped about it, but eventually coughed up an address for the salvage yard the two land-rovers the research group brought had ended up.
Amanda was only too happy to leave the place. Her nerves settled nicely as she drove away.
The junkyard was about what she would have expected. She told the attendant what the campground's owner had revealed, and was led to the two wrecked land rovers.
Their condition was so different that Amanda suspected they had been in seperate accidents. One was almost unrecognizeable, a burnt out husk. The other had been gutted by the junkyard for the engine, but still seemed relatively intact, as if it had just been knocked around a bit. Most curious.
Amanda asked the attendant if she could look around in the less damaged vehicle, and managed to get permission. Inside, she was surprised to see that it looked somewhat lived in, containing the personal effects of one Caitlin Carradine. Finding Caitlin's University ID, she stared at the photo, wondering why she felt as if she knew this woman.
Her unease was nothing compared to what she felt when she came across a bedraggled diary in the belongings, the smudged cover stating that it belonged to a girl named Zoë Whittaker...

Her parents are happy for it. They were so worried for her when they had moved out to their new home in the country. Mary was a child of the city, and they thought she'd never adjust to her new life. She'd balked and complained ever since the move, and her parents had almost regretted their decision.
Then, one day they convinced her to take a walk around the property, just to see if she'd like it. She returned with a bouquet of wildflowers, a sworn convert. She's spent her evenings playing with the family's two huskies ever since.

Zoë Whittaker can only remember the last few weeks of her life when she sleeps. When she wakes up, she always forgets. The doctors told her that was normal, and she took the pills like a good girl.
The students that she was a Teaching Assistant for could tell she was sad. Hell, anyone could, just seeing that she dressed like she was in mourning.
Perhaps she was.
If only she could remember why.
Phoebe Reardon has been swamped with work. She and her roommate Laura were about the only people interested in the A/V club. That meant that anytime one of the campus organizations needed some footage edited into a cohesive format for some inane promotional video, it landed squarely on their shoulders.
Thank God it was almost the weekend.
Phoebe had every intention of getting shitfaced with Laura. They'd earned a break, and this weekend wasn't coming too soon for either of them. She'd gotten a senior to score them a case of Guinness.
They were going to run wild. Celebrate in style.
Amanda shivered after having read the diary. It had sparked odd memories of the mission, memories she hadn't been able to recall earlier.
It had to be a work of fiction, she thought. Any sane person would realize that.
She might not exactly be sane, though. The flashbacks felt very real.
