“What the...”
Upon seeing the state of her apartment, Jamie’s only reaction was wide eyed disbelief. Not only was the place all set up, the décor and furnishings were 10 times better than what she previously had! It looked like those ritzy apartments you see on TV sitcoms all the time! Fine leather furniture, a 65’’ TV, mahogany tables, an Alienware laptop, a fancy desktop and an honest to god chandelier?! How the hell did this all happen?
Was it the power of the mirror?
Jamie had no answer. Grabbing the remote, she turned off the TV which was now blaring the opening theme of Sailor Moon, a show she now remembered watching as a kid (did she?). With the distraction gone, she took the moment to soak in more of her surroundings. The walls were adorned with many pieces of abstract art and old-fashioned paintings, something she found aesthetically appealing. However, it was the framed pictures on her desktop that really caught her attention. The first one had her and a bunch of other boys dressed in their school letterman jackets. They were all standing before a sign that said...
Sciencenauts 2017
She was a member of the school’s science club?! Actually...yes, she was! All the memories were there, she even served as president during her senior year! She also remembered her time in the chess club! But she was also on the track team! Jamie groaned; it was all getting so confusing! What immediatly caught her attention though was her jacket. She did have a letterman jacket but the one in the picture.... wasn’t hers. She had the standard track issue with an H, this one however, had a ringed planet, the emblem of the Sciencenauts. The jacket also seemed to have a LOT more patches than her old track one.
The next photo showed her in the chess club uniform she saw earlier, alongside nine others. Strange, 45 minutes ago, she had no idea how to even play chess but now? She practically knew the game inside out! The other two photos showcased her graduation and one where she was with her boyfriend at some restaurant. No doubt about it, this was Dexter. She frowned.
“Not an attractive fellow by any means” she said aloud.
He was a scrawny looking thing, with large black rimmed glassed, thick braces, acne covering his whole face and curly red hair. Old Jamie never knew him but he was apparently a childhood friend of smart Jamie. Going by her new memories, he was by all accounts a great guy, if totally geekish. Apparently, they started dating in their Sophomore year and had become increasingly tight. Smart Jamie clearly had a thing for him, alas it seemed they hadn’t made it to fourth base yet (befitting of a nerd). She sighed.
She was getting thirsty.
Walking to kitchen, she grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and seated herself at the counter. An unopened letter lay there and curiosity getting the better of her, she decided to have look...
It was from Harvard?!
Now she was really curious!
As Jamie read the letter a big wide smile slowly emerged on her face as a wave of joy swept her. As she hastily went about calling her mother, she could feel the familiar metal and wires lovingly embrace her teeth. Flashing a smile, she could see them through the reflection of the phone. Not surprisingly, upon hearing the news, her mother was ecstatic, barely able to contain her excitement. Once the congratulatory spectacle finished, she texted Dexter.
“Guess who’s joining you at Harvard? =)”
“Shucks, you made it? Awesome job J!”
“Couldn’t have done it without you! Nerds Rule!”
“Nerds Rule!”
Like before, clarity returned to Jamie once that cringey line struck her brainwaves. Panicking, she rushed to the bathroom and to confirm her fears.
She had her braces; it would only be a matter of time before the buck teeth arrived. It was now or never. Rushing to the hallway closet, Jamie pulled out a hammer and made her way to her room.
