Twisting around, he compared his size and shape to vague memories, and finally realized he had been turned into an adolescent brown bear. he was much bigger than he had been as a boy, but nowhere near the mass of an adult bear. The equivalent of his human self, he guessed. What was stranger than the actual change was his reaction - being transformed into an animal was totally accepted. He remembered his entire human life, knew he had been a human boy just minutes before, yet Thomas felt as comfortable and normal in this new form as if he had been born and lived all his life as a bear.
The smell of humans and their many artificial items wafted from the camp, and the former boy started to turn back to where he had come from. Then his muzzle rippled in distaste as new instincts and sensibilities told him humans should be avoided. Part of that was Thomas realizing that he could hardly explain to anyone what happened with grunts and roars - he would be seen simply as a dangerous animal and probably shot. The rest was a growing bear identity that understood home was the woods and humans were intruders to be avoided.
