You didn't mean to stay there and watch what horrors would come down for that hole. Pete seemed to have the same idea
“Come on, I'll give you a hand”. He puts himself under the hole and propels you up.
A cloud of dust covered the room above you. You cover your mouth and nose with the back of your shirt to prevent it from suffocate you.
The police station had been reduced to a heap of ruins. There seemed to be no trace of human life up there. There was no roof and you could see the sky obscured by clouds laden with smoke and ash.
After verifying that the stairs that led to the basement had been buried under the fallen rubble you look for something to help your other companions.
You find a climbing rope in what must have been a backpack owned by one of the soldiers assigned to guard you. But there was no sign of its owner. Most likely, the guy would have escaped when the monsters entered the city.
He might have had the grace to open the door before stepping out, you thought.
You tie one end of the rope to a half-collapsed column and throw the other through the hole in the floor that led to the basement.
Only Pete dares to go out.
Your partner decides to go to the backyard to check if it is clear. You instead choose to take a look at the front and keep an eye out for these beings that kept destroying the city.
The image was daunting: A huge fire was consuming the city. In the middle of the flames you could see them, moving between the buildings that were still standing, knocking them down with those gloved fists covered with metal plates. The sound of firearms seemed to have faded and you didn't see anyone wearing a uniform. The only thing that you could hear were the screams of the people trapped in that hell as they were crushed by the collapse of the buildings above them.
Somewhere behind you there is a human scream full of terror. You feel a tremor running through your body.There is only one person on the entire building that would make that noise.
“Pete!”
You back out of the front window and run back to the back of the building as quickly as possible.
In the doorway that leads to the backyard, you stop short when you see a shadow climb over what was left of the knocked down wall.
It was a monstrous form, muscular and moving on all fours. The heads were Bulbous tumors attached by muscular necks to the rest of that hairless body. They were shaking anxiously; it seemed to be sniffing the air through slits in the skin that must have served as its snouts.
The creature's body stops short. With the trio of heads rose as if it was a dog. It must have smelled you since you couldn't see anything in that mass of flesh and skin that looked like eyes.
Lines form under those snouts, opening in that pale skin like an open wound, revealing mouths full of fangs as large as daggers.
You jump under some rubble on your left with hardly any time to think, a movement that saves you when a claw blows the wooden door where you were standing a few moments ago.
You manage to slide through the fallen rubble exiting through a hole located in the side of the building. You stop for a moment, wheezing.
A roar charged with fury and hunger echoed behind you from the darkest corners of the building. But for the moment it had lost sight of you.
Raising your head you realize that you are outside the police station in the ruins of the city invaded and surrounded by unknown forces from another world. You may have misled that beast but now you found yourself in the middle of an even more dangerous situation.
"God, what a fucking day!"
Perhaps you had managed to escape from that refuge before being invaded. But now you were in the middle of a war zone.
