I woke up slowly, in stages. First, I was aware a low sound... 'beep... beep... beep...' I did not know what it was but it seemed close. Next, I was aware of a smell, the odor of a sterilizing chemicals; a smell one would expect to detect from a hospital room. Then I felt something touching my chest. It was round, metallic, and cold. The momentary shock of a cold object touching me forced a low moan to escape my lips. The object was lifted.
"Her heart rate has returned to normal, Larry." with relief, a familiar sound said. "She's starting to come around."
"She?" confused, I thought. then I remembered. Right... the body swap experiment, I'm Melody now."
"Wait for her to wake up then run her through the check list, I will do the same with her brother." quivering with a certain excitement, Larry's voice replied.
The doctor's voice had some static in it, suggesting they were talking over an intercom or two way radio. Slowly, I opened my eyes and became aware of a new weight on my chest as I saw Gloria smiling at me. "Please bear with me for as moment." softly, she said. "We need to ensure nothing was left for chance." pausing, the said, "Sit up, please."
I did so and Gloria asked me to move my arms in a circle then rotate my wrists before flexing each finger and turning my head in various directions. "Good, your motor skills seem fine so far." pleased, she said. "Please try to stand, I will help you steady yourself."
Eventually I managed to keep my eyes open and groggily stand up. I looked down at Melody's little hands, trying to comprehend that these were now my hands, for the rest of my life.
"Fascinating, isn't it?" Gloria asked. "Well, I can only imagine, myself. Although I wouldn't mind trying it myself someday..."
"I can't believe it..." I muttered. I recognised my voice as Melody's, though it sounded a bit different from the inside. I continued to gingerly stare down until she spoke again.
"Now, we just need to run through a few quick tests to make sure the swap went smoothly. First, I just want you to walk to the other side of the room."
I looked down at my feet, slowly placed one in front of the other and wobbled a little.
"You're thinking too hard," Gloria told me. "Just relax and start walking like everything's normal."
I took a breath, fixed my eyes on the wall across from me and started moving toward it. Sure enough, I made it there with no trouble. The distance seemed bigger, though, with my short legs.
"Good," Gloria said. "Now turn and come back."
I did so, and on the way back caught sight of myself in the full-length mirror. I was shocked at my sight. A little girl's body perfectly reacted at my moves. I started crying.
Gloria looked a bit concerned, but then she patted my head "Oh dear... try not to be that hard on you: it'll be fine. You are female and younger now and you need to accept that. You can't just go back to acting like this never happened."
"Yeah, yeah, I know... How is Melody doing?"
She called the doctor and asked how my "brother" was doing. Perfectly, apparently.
"That brings up another point" She added then. "Melody is your name now, and David is your brother. And you are four years old. You had better start calling each other as such right away."
I just sighed at that. Well, I was still David on the inside, whatever people called me.
"Anyway," Gloria said, "I need to test a couple other things. Sit down for me, please."
I obliged by sitting on the edge of the bed, which was tall enough that my feet didn't reach the ground. Not something I was used to.
Gloria fetched a little mallet and lightly hit my knee with it, prompting me to involuntarily jerk my leg upward.
"Okay, reflexes are good," she said. "And now, well..."
Gloria put the mallet down on the table, picked up a clipboard and walked a few steps away while writing something down. Then she stopped and looked thoughtful.
"So, uh..." I said to break the silence.
"Hmm. Well, there's some more data we need to gather, but... It would be best to leave those things for later, once you've lived like this for a while. Now then, I'll leave you to get dressed."
I turned my head to look at the pile of Melody's clothing. "Ummm..."
"Of course I'm helping you. The skill of dressing up alone like a big girl is something you have to relearn"
"Well I actually have to learn it completely, I mean, I learnt to dressing up like a boy" we both laughed.
First, she slid the panties on me. I was expecting the empty feeling would have scared me but it didn't. I was very concerned. I started thinking and looking confused. Then Gloria finally said "yes, it's perfectly normal nor feeling strange for this... your brain is now mapped as having always had girl parts and has no memories of your old... boy parts".
I nodded. I was a bit contrariated by this, but I knew it was useless to complain. And after all, at least I didn't have to get used to my new genitalia.
So, Gloria put me on the blue dress Melody was wearing and brided my hair into pigtails. My reflection showed me as kinda of cute... I liked it, somehow.
I then wore Melody's shoes. I could do it alone.
Gloria then opened the door and let me out. My family was all there and to my surprise I saw my old body, now inhabited by Melody, taking me up easily.
"Boy, I'm so happy I can do this" he said "hope you'll have fun being a little girl as much as I'm liking be a big guy" the new David said.
"Meee-looo.dieee" i heard Amelia saying "how's been part of the female club now?" she laughed "don't worry, I'll be sure you grow up like me!"
I looked at my parents worried and then Cassie said "away from him". Everyone, except for me, glaced at her, so she corrected "I meant, her... Melody... I've asked David and our parents to let you stay in our old bedroom... so we don't have to separate... and well, we can spend time together".
A lot was going to change, but not my twin's love.
